Gerhard L. Henning, age 96, of Zeeland, MI, formerly of New Germany, died Thursday, Sept. 23, 2010, at Providence Health Care in Zeeland.
He was born Feb. 10, 1914, in New Germany, the son of August and Martha (Zuehl) Henning. Gerhard was baptized March 13, 1914, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Theo Rolf, and confirmed by the same Jan. 1, 1928.
Gerhard was united in marriage to Lorena E. Barlau Sept. 10, 1936, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Theo Rolf.
A loving husband, dad, grandpa, and great-grandpa, Gerhard’s passion was farming, and he loved to go fishing with the Roepke brothers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, August and Martha Henning; an infant son; son Dennis Henning; brother and sister-in-law Leonard and Anna Henning (Mielke); and sister and brother-in-law Leona and Charles Parpart.
Gerhard is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Lorena; daughter and son-in-law Marilyn and Charlie Bengston of Zeeland, MI; grandchildren Debra Baker of Byron, MI, Stacy and Pete Lounsbury of Spring Lake, MI, and Chad Bengston of Holland, MI; great-grandchildren Dakota, Jenna and Dylan Baker; and Evan and Kristen Lounsbury; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Lila and Ben Quaas of Mayer; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service took place Tuesday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany with visitation from noon until the time of the service. The Rev. LeRoy LaPlant officiated. Interment was at St. Mark Lutheran Cemetery.
Casket bearers were Chad Bengston, Pete Lounsbury, Danny Parpart, Keith Quaas, Kevin Quaas, and Doug Steinborn.
