Lois Jenneke, 94

Lois Louise Anna Jenneke, age 94, of Winsted, formerly of Lester Prairie, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

She was born March 22, 1916, in Buffalo, on the shores of Bebe Lake, the daughter of William and Agnes (Schmalz) Ernst. Lois was baptized as an infant April 16, 1916, by the Rev. C. J. Schroeder, and was later confirmed in her faith as a youth June 19, 1930, by the Rev. A. Spleiss. Given her independent spirit, Lois insisted on being confirmed in English rather than the traditional German used in services at that time, and she was the first person to be confirmed in English at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.

Lois attended Lester Prairie High School and graduated with the class of 1934. She furthered her education by attending Lawrence Beauty School in Minneapolis.

At the age of 21, she started her own business, The Fashionetter Beauty Shop. Lois remained a life-long beautician and did hair for the local funeral homes, including McBride Funeral Chapels.

Lois was united in marriage to Emmert Jenneke Oct. 5, 1940, at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. This marriage was blessed with three children, Gary, Mary, and Jan.

Lois and Emmert resided in several locations including: Minneapolis, Danube, Hutchinson, Glenwood, and Lester Prairie. They shared 53 years of marriage, until Emmert passed away May 29, 1994.

Lois enjoyed dancing and any kind of social event. She was an outgoing person and nobody remained a stranger very long in her presence.

After she retired, Lois did volunteer work for nursing homes and drove for social services. She cherished the time she spent with her family and friends.

Lois is survived by her children, Gary Jenneke of St. Paul, Mary Riggan and her husband, Ben of Golden, MO, and Jan Knisley and her husband, David of Tabernash, CO; grandchildren Adam Wasser and his wife, Chere, Nathan Wasser and his wife, Amy, and Nicholas Wasser and his wife, Johanna; and great-grandchildren Carter Wasser, Cade Wasser, Callie Wasser, and McKenzie Wasser.

She is further survived by a brother, William Ernst and his wife, Eunice of Howard Lake; sister-in-law Viola Jenneke of Waconia; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband, Emmert, Lois was preceded in death by her parents, William and Agnes Ernst; brothers Harold Ernst and Alvin Ernst; and a sister, Helen Emich.

Funeral services were Sunday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with the Rev. Eric Nelson officiating. Marsha Christenson was the organist, and soloist Derek Ernst sang “In The Garden.” Congregational hymns were “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” and “How Great Thou Art.” Interment took place Monday, Sept. 20 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Casket bearers were Adam Wasser, Nathan Wasser, Nicholas Wasser, Jason Ernst, Bill Ernst, and Rod Maetzold.

Arrangements were by the Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel of Lester Prairie. Online obituaries and guest book are available at www.hantge.com; please click on Obituaries/Guest Book.
