Melinda A. Kappel, 88

Melinda Arona Kappel, age 88, of Winsted, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.

She was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Winsted, the daughter of John V. and Anna I. (Rathmanner) Kappel. Melinda was baptized at Holy Trinity Catholic Church Dec. 28, 1925. Her godparents were Joseph J. Kappel. her uncle; and Annie I. Schlagel, her aunt.

Melinda attended Holy Trinity School, graduating in June of 1940. In June 1941, she graduated from the Teacher Training School in Hutchinson. Some rural schools she taught in were near Hutchinson, Silver Lake, Mayer, Jordan, Winthrop, Gibbon, and Watertown.

She earned her bachelor of science teaching degree at St. Cloud State University, and later taught at Holy Trinity Elementary School for more than 40 years.

A faithful, life-long member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Melinda was a member of the Catholic Aid Society and CCW.

She liked attending art fairs, concerts, and parades, and taking historical trips.

Dogs were her favorite animals. She also enjoyed feeding birds and was known by some as the “Bird Lady.”

Melinda is survived by a sister, Veronica Kappel; nieces Michelle (Evon) Weber of Chaska, Lisa (Paul) Dondlinger of Eagan, and Pauline Kelzer of California; nephews Gary Seymour of Grand Rapids, Gregg (Kim) Seymour of Watertown, Ken (Charlene) Kelzer of California, Raymond (Rysia) Kelzer of Colorado, William (Tomasina) Kelzer, and Charles (Laney) Kelzer, all of California; great nieces, great nephews, great, great nieces and great, great nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna I. (Rathmanner) Kappel; sisters Florentine (Ray) Kelzer, Elizabeth (Cy) Seymour, and Lorraine (Ernest) Greshowiak; a brother, Vincent Kappel; and a niece, Joy Seymour.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted with Father Tony Hesse as the celebrant. Communion distributors were Francis Schommer, David and Karen Dawes, and Jean Kappel. Interment followed at Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Visitation was Saturday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of services at the church.

Casket bearers were Gary Seymour, Gregg Seymour, Fran Kappel, Evon Weber, Dan Weber, and Matt Seymour.

The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family.
