Herman E. Leistiko, age 72, of Cologne, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2010, at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
He was born Nov. 17, 1937, in Minneapolis, the son of William and Hulda (Schmidt) Leistiko. Herman was baptized Dec. 5, 1937, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia, by the Rev. William Schneider; and confirmed March 25, 1951, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Watertown by the Rev. John Spomer.
Herman was united in marriage to Darlene L. Koepp Aug. 16, 1958, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine, by the Rev. O.F. Herder.
Herman worked as a mechanic at the Ford garage in Waconia after high school. When he married Darlene, they moved to Belle Plaine, where he farmed and worked as a livestock trucker for 15 years.
Herman started working for Wm. Mueller and Sons in 1972, and remained there until 2004, when he retired.
After his retirement, Herman served on the Benton Township board in several capacities.
Herman loved his lake home, going fishing in the winter and summer months. He enjoyed old tyme music, playing cards, and restoring old Ford tractors; and would always try to take in all of his grandchildren’s activities, which he loved.
Herman had a knack for fixing anything that was broken in record time, and would help out with the harvesting of crops, which he truly enjoyed.
Herman was preceded in death by his father and mother, William and Hulda Leistiko; stepmother Rosella Leistiko; and father-in-law and mother-in-law Paul and Erna Koepp.
He is survived by his loving family: wife Darlene; son Steve Leistiko of Cologne; daughters and sons-in-law Sonja and Tim Wolter, and Deb and Steven Wolter, all of Norwood Young America; grandchildren Dereck and Karly Wolter, Jessica Wolter, Mackenzie Wolter, and Afton Wolter; brother and sister-in-law Willis and Janice Leistiko of St. Bonifacius; sister and brother-in-law Katherine and Loren Baumann of Mayer; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law ElRoy and Marlys Koepp of Belle Plaine, Elrena and Duane Scharpe of Glencoe, and Don and Diane Koepp of Belle Plaine; aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
The funeral service took place Tuesday, Nov. 9 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Benton Township, Cologne, with the Rev. Eric Zacharias officiating. Interment was in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation was Monday, Nov. 8 from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at the Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia; and continued Tuesday for one hour prior to the service at church.
Casket bearers were Dereck Wolter, Karly Wolter, Jessica Wolter, Mackenzie Wolter, and Afton Wolter.
