Gary Ervin Lundeen, age 70, of Maple Grove, formerly of Cokato, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2010, at the Anoka Care Center.
He was born Jan. 2, 1940, to Ervin and Eunice (Munson) Lundeen, the first baby of the year born in the Cokato Hospital in 1940. He grew up on the farm in Cokato.
Gary attended first grade in country school, grades two through nine at Cokato public school, grades 10 and 11 in Hutchinson, and graduated from Cokato High School in 1957. He participated in track, wrestling, and cross country while in high school.
After graduation, Gary attended Luther Bible Institute, St. Cloud State College, and Augsburg College, then finished at Long Beach State in California. He became a parole officer for the California Youth Authority.
Gary was in the US Army from 1959-1962. He was in basic training at Ft. Hood, and later stationed in Bethel, MN at the Nike, Hercules guided missile base.
In 1972, he became a probation officer for Meeker County.
Gary married Kathy Gurvine Oct. 18, 1968. The couple had two children, Jennifer and David.
He later married Joan Talbert.
Gary was a parole officer for McLeod County in 1973, and an adult parole officer for Hennepin County in 1975, retiring in 2002.
He loved to encourage people without sacrificing a client’s accountability. He enjoyed attending speaking engagements, cared very much about his job, and made lifelong friends of his co-workers and clients.
Thankful for growing up in a Christian home, Gary was very proud of his children and grandchildren, and made sure each grandchild had a band instrument. He enjoyed traveling, and visited Europe five times. He also ran in six marathons, and played and taught tennis.
Gary enjoyed reading, jokes (good and bad), and watching game shows, and thought dogs were God’s special creation.
He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Jerry) Brosdahl of Menahga; son David Lundeen of Crystal; grandchildren Samantha, Zachary, Dylan, and Jacob; former wife Kathy Lundeen of Golden Valley; brother-in-law Merrill Birkholz of Howard Lake; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Eunice; and a sister, Ramona Birkholz.
A memorial service took place Saturday, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Cokato with Pastor Al Jones officiating. Music was provided by Jan Ostroot, Jacob Lundeen, Samantha Brosdahl, and Zachary Brosdahl.
The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato handled the arrangements.
