Mary Catherine Mattson, age 85, of Cokato, died Monday, July 19, 2010, at the Cokato Manor.
She was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Chippewa County, on a farm north of Maynard, MN, the daughter of Arthur and Blanche (Bunt) Schmaedeka. Mary was baptized as a small child at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City, and confirmed at the Swedish Lutheran Church of Murdock.
She attended grade schools near DeGraff and Murdock.
Mary married Ralph Mattson at the Cokato Lutheran Church parsonage Oct. 5, 1946. To this union, one daughter, Edna Irene (Mattson) McKay was born.
Mary worked as a waitress most of her life. She retired from the Carlson Company in Howard Lake in 1987, after 10 years of employment there.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Edna (Barry) McKay; and grandchildren Joshua and Kaytlyn McKay, all of Falling Waters, WV; sisters-in-law Donna Schmaedeka and Annette Schmaedeka of Crystal; a sister, Joyce (James) Todd of Le Center; an aunt, Selma Schmaedeka of Maynard; and a host of nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Blanche; husband Ralph; a brother, Howard; and a sister-in-law, Ardyce Hagel.
A memorial service took place Saturday, July 24 at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Howard Lake with the Rev. Dwight Chamberlain officiating. Music was provided by Doreen Lorentz and Nathan Stenberg, and interment was at Sylvan Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake and Cokato.
