Bernhard “Ben” Fred Neuhaus, age 84, of Glencoe, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2010, in Glencoe.
He was born May 2, 1926, in Sibley County, the son of Helmuth and Alwina (Schauer) Neuhaus. Bernhard was baptized as an infant May 16, 1926, by the Rev. Reuter at Zion Lutheran Church in Sibley County; and confirmed in his faith April 6, 1941, by the Rev. Streufert at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe.
Ben entered active military service during World War II, serving in both the Merchant Marines and the US Army. He received the Pacific, Atlantic, and Mediterranean service metals, and the WWII Victory Metal.
Bernhard was united in marriage to Evangeline (Lange) Neuhaus Dec. 12, 1948, by the Rev. H.H. Schaller at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Helen Township. This marriage was blessed with four children, Bernie, Larry, Betty and Patti.
Ben and Evangeline (Vangie) resided in Glencoe. They would have had their 62nd wedding anniversary this year.
After serving in the military, Ben operated the Standard Oil Station in Glencoe, on the corner of 10th Street and Hennepin Avenue. He was also a contract carrier for the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. However, he spent most of his career as a carpenter.
A faithful member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe, Ben served as a trustee. He was also a member of the Glencoe VFW Post 5102 and the Glencoe Senior Citizens.
Ben enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He and Vangie enjoyed going on tours with friends and family, and vacationing. He especially cherished the time spent with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Ben is survived by his wife, Evangeline Neuhaus of Glencoe; children, Bernie Neuhaus and his wife, Julie, of Glencoe, Larry Neuhaus and his wife, Colleen, of Plato, Betty Brost and her husband, Mark, of North Oaks, and Patti Lorence and her husband, Brian, of Hudson, WI; grandchildren, Barret Neuhaus, and his wife, Julie, of Altoona, WI, Nicole Boswell and her husband, Mitch, of Elk River, Melissa Mlejnek and her husband, Steve, of Belle Plaine, Mariah Hanson and her husband, Tony, of Alexandria, David Brost of St. Paul, Cassandra Brost of Minneapolis, Justin Lorence and his wife, Cassie, of Bloomington, Krystal Lorence of Minneapolis, and Jenna Lorence of Hudson, WI; and great-grandchildren, Ethan Mlejnek, Steven Mlejnek, Luke Mlejnek, Grace Boswell, Noah Boswell, Erica Neuhaus, and Eden Hanson.
He is further survived by sisters, Lorna Nemitz and her husband, Orville, of Glencoe, Hilda Rannow of Gaylord, and Irene Beinke of Fairmont; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and many friends.
Bernhard was preceded in death by his parents, Helmuth and Alwina Neuhaus; sisters Della Brown, Esther Dahlen, and Elva Haferman; and a brother, Jerry Neuhaus.
A celebration of Ben’s life took place Tuesday, Dec. 14 at 1 p.m. at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe, with interment immediately following in the church cemetery. The Rev. Ronald Mathison officiated. Cheryl Andrix was the organist. Congregational hymns were “Just As I Am,” “I Am But A Stranger Here,” “Abide With Me,” and “Amazing Grace.”
Casket bearers were Barret Neuhaus, Justin Lorence, David Brost, Mitch Boswell, Steve Mlejnek, and Tony Hanson.
