John ‘Mud Lake’ Olson Obituary – 2/28/2010


John S. “Mud Lake” Olson, age 80, of Maple Plain, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, at his home.

He was born July 19, 1929, to Selmer and Ester (Brecke) Olson in Tyro Township, MN.

John was very active in the Delano community. He was a dedicated member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, a charter member of Council 4653 of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Delano Sportsman’s Club, and the oldest member of the Delano Athletic Club.

He visited the Delano Nursing Home every Thursday evening for more than 35 years, was a member of the Delano Senior Choir, and an active volunteer for the Delano Food Shelf.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Selmer and Esther Olson; infant sons; sisters and brothers-in-law Glenn and Shirley Fairchild, and Richard and Donna Marie Bliss; and godson Chad Sherlin.

He is survived by his wife of 60 and one-half years, Mary; son David and Merrilee; “The apple of his eye,” granddaughter Casey Marie; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Charles and Betty Holthaus; special nieces and nephews, four Bliss, four Fairchild, and 11 Holthauses; and godson Michael Soshnik.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, March 4 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Delano with the Rev. Christopher Wenthe officiating. Interment was at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Delano.

Visitation was Wednesday, March 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Iten Funeral Home in Delano, and continued Thursday from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home, prior to leaving for the Mass.

Arrangements were by the Iten Funeral Home in Delano.
