Carl Ole Olson, age 87, of Lake George, formerly of Cokato, died Friday, April 23, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Area Health Services in Park Rapids.
He was born Jan. 3, 1923, in Stockholm Township, Wright County, the son of Ludvig and Louise (Opsahl) Olson. Carl attended country school near his home through the eighth grade, and then Litchfield High School.
In 1943, Carl joined the US Navy. He served his country in the Pacific Theater of War until his honorable discharge in 1946.
Upon his return to the States, Carl worked for a time with the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Returning to Cokato, Carl was reacquainted with Elsie Leukuma. They were engaged on Valentine’s Day, and united in marriage June 28, 1947.
The couple made their home in Minneapolis, where they resided for over 50 years and raised two daughters, Cynthia and Debra.
Carl was employed at the Munsingwear Company as a sewing machine maintenance man for almost 30 years. He was a member of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis, where he served on the church board.
A few years after his retirement in 1994, Carl and Elsie moved to their home in Lake George, where they became members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Carl was also a member of the American Legion in Park Rapids, and the Disabled American Veterans.
Carl and Elsie enjoyed traveling and were able to visit much of the continental United States. They also took trips to Alaska and the Bahamas.
In his younger days, Carl was an avid bowler, and belonged to various leagues throughout the years.
Above all, Carl was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
He will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 62 years, Elsie Olson of Lake George; his daughters, Cindy Wilson of Belgrade, and Debra Olson of Ettrick, WI; seven grandchildren: Angela Drum, Jason Drum, Ryan Wilson, Jessica Johnson, Jennifer Bursaw, Kysa Bursaw, and Benjamin Huffman; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Deloris (Jack) Spalding of Anderson, CA, and Mary Ruth Leukuma of Dassel; and a brother, Phillip Olson of Dassel.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law Bruce Wilson; a brother, Ruben Olson; and a sister, Phyllis Molliter.
The funeral service took place Wednesday, April 28, at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake George, with the Rev. Donald Kirchner officiating. Organist was Karen Lueth, and congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “Abide With Me, and “Great is Thy Faithfulness.” Interment with military honors, provided by American Legion Post 212, took place at Lake George Cemetery in Lake George.
Casket bearers were Jason Drum, Ryan Wilson, Carroll Kahlstorf, Lenny Wagner, Brian Hermes, and John Westad. All of Carl’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren were honorary casket bearers.
Arrangements were by the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids.
