Winton R. Olson, 83

Winton Richard Olson, age 83, of Willmar, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2010, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.

He was born Jan. 14, 1927, in Dassel, the son of Richard and Minnie (Sunblad) Olson. Winton was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Dassel.

Winton graduated from Dassel High School in 1944.

He enlisted in the US Navy and was admitted to the V-12 program. At the conclusion of WWII, he returned home and attended Gustavus Adolphus College, graduating in 1948.

In August of 1948, Winton was united in marriage to Lorraine Haapala, in Dassel.

The couple lived in the Dassel-Cokato area, where Winton worked in the seed corn industry, and was later the business administrator for Mount Carmel Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, and an auditor for the State of Minnesota.

The couple moved to Willmar in 1967.

Winton was active on boards and committees throughout his life, including Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar, chairman of the Finance Committee at Independence Place Cooperative Senior Housing, and Willmar American Legion.

He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, swimming, camping, and hiking at Itasca State Park and Sibley State Park. His hobbies included following sports and reading. Winton especially enjoyed spending time and visiting with his friends, family, and grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Lorraine; son Michael (and Jane) Olson of Masonville, CO; daughter Wendy (and Jeff) Rasmussen of Mount Horeb, WI; two grandchildren: Kyle and Leah Rasmussen; three sisters: Hazel (and William) Jensen of Shoreview, Marie (and John) Wright of Buffalo, and Audrey Wessman of Brainerd; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Winton was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, Elwood Wessman.

The funeral service took place Thursday, Oct. 7 at 11 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar, with visitation for one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment was in the church cemetery.
