Irene M. Painschab, 89

Irene Martha (Pofahl) Painschab, age 89, of Buffalo, formerly of Waverly, died Sunday, Jan. 24, 2010, at the Buffalo Hospital.

She was born March 10, 1920, in Hutchinson, the daughter of William and Florence (Ostrom) Pofahl.

Irene was united in marriage to Leonard G. Painschab Nov. 4, 1938, in Hutchinson.

Irene’s childhood was not easy, making her a strong woman. With that strength, she gave back to those around her.

Some of her accomplishments included teaching Sunday school for 23 years, acting as church elder at Waverly Presbyterian church for three years, and serving as Waverly Senior Citizens vice president for three years, and as a member of the Montrose Senior Citizens for two years. She was involved with Wright County home health care eight years; in a grief support program, managed the 4-H stand for 18 years with her husband, served as a member of the QQ for more than 49 years, and was a member of the Blue Ribbon Group, and AARP board.

Irene volunteered to perform pre-school screenings, served on the seniors citizens lunch program, and was named Wright County Senior Citizen of the Year, and Minnesota Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year. She was a member of the Catholic Charities board, a food shelf volunteer, a volunteer at the Buffalo Community Center, and involved with the Central MN Council on aging.

In addition, she was named an Eleven Who Kare nominee, an Ageless Heroes nominee, was an AAGE 1990 Calendar Girl, a volunteer at Howard Lake Good Samaritan Center, served with the VFW Post and Auxiliary, and was named a WCCO Good Neighbor in the 1990s.

Irene was also a fisherwoman, and a member of the Wright Singers, as well as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In addition, she was also the first recipient of the annual Leonard Painschab Memorial Citizen Volunteer award.

Irene is survived by her loving family; children Marion F. (George) Tellgren of Richfield, Marie E. (Darrell) Barth of Sioux Falls, SD, and John E. Painschab of Stamford, TX; grandchildren Kimberly (Jeff) Bryan, Scott (Stephanie) Barth, Tim (Angie) Barth, Michael (Amy) Anderson, Tim (Michelle) Painschab, Brandon Painschab, and Jeremy (Sharee) Painschab; and great-grandchildren Colin Bryan, Kourtney, Cody and Colton Anderson; Kaitlyn, Joshua and Allyson Barth;, Mollie Barth, and Allysa, Nathan and Ashley Painschab.

She is further survived by siblings Betty Pulkrabek of Hutchinson, Helen (Ralph) Piehl of Silver Lake, Alma Johnson, Robert Pofahl, both of Hutchinson, and Sandra (David) Frauenshuh of Edina; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard G.; a son, Lenny; a sister, Eleanore Hagen; a brother, Bill Pofahl; and her parents William H. (Victoria) Pofahl and Florence (Ed) Robinson.

The funeral service was Saturday, Jan. 30 at 11 a.m. at the Buffalo Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Judith Kim officiating. Interment was at the Howard Lake Cemetery.

Visitation was Friday, Jan. 29 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Peterson Chapel in Buffalo, and continued Saturday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

Irene’s grandchildren were honorary casket bearers.

The Peterson Chapel in Buffalo served the family.
