Russel Dean Pettis, age 72, of Glencoe, passed away unexpectedly Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at his residence.
He was born May 27, 1938, in North Redwood Falls, MN, the son of William and Elvera (Minkel) Pettis. Russel was baptized as an infant in 1938, in North Redwood; and was later confirmed in his faith as a youth in 1953, in Edgerton, WI.
He attended Redwood Falls High School and graduated with the class of 1957.
Russel entered active military service in the US Army Reserve July 27, 1957; and received an honorable discharge June 24, 1964.
Russel was united in marriage to Bernadine (Ruhland) Pettis Oct. 20, 1962, in Redwood Falls. This marriage was blessed with one child, Troy. Russel and Bernadine shared 47 years of marriage.
Russel did house plastering work in the Redwood Falls area until 1968, when he joined the Redwood County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy. In 1970, he joined the McLeod County Sheriff’s Office, achieving the rank of chief deputy, and retiring in 1993.
He was a member of First Congregational Church and held the position of deacon.
Russel enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and having coffee with his buddies. He especially loved being a grandfather, and spending time with his family and friends.
Memorial services took place Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2 p.m. at First Congregational Church in Glencoe with Pastor Brian Brosz officiating. Pianist was Lucia Reach. Special music was provided by Laurie Fontes and Patrick Coyle, “In The Garden,” “Welcome To My World,” “You Raise Me Up,” “Here I Am, Lord,” and “On Eagle’s Wings.” Bagpiper Steve Hamilton played “Amazing Grace.”
Russel’s grandchildren, Mitchell Opdahl, Max Opdahl, Piper Pettis, and Myles Pettis, were honorary urn bearers.
Russel is survived by his wife, Bernadine Pettis of Glencoe; son Troy Pettis and his wife, Kelly of Blaine; grandchildren Mitchell Opdahl, Max Opdahl, Piper Pettis, and Myles Pettis; sisters Carol Pettis of Willmar, and Bonnie Beran and her husband, Kenny of Redwood Falls; brothers Jim Pettis of Willmar, Gene Pettis and his wife, Sharon, Curt Pettis and his wife, JoAnn, all of Redwood Falls, and David Pettis and his wife, Diane of Ormsby, MN; sister-in-law Lorraine Aufenthie and her husband, Tom of Sherwood, OR; nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Elvera Pettis.
