Raymond A. Ruzicka, age 91, of Winsted, died Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place Monday, Sept. 20, 2010 at 5 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. Father Tony Hesse will be the Celebrant. Entombment will be at Holy Trinity Catholic Cemetery in Winsted.
Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 20 from 1 to 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Care Center in Winsted, and continue at the Chilson Funeral Chapel from 2:30 p.m. until the time of the services.
Casket bearers are Dean Schermann, Tom Schermann, Paul Schermann, Harry Engle, Don Cuhel, and Jeremy Cardinal.
Raymond was born May 6, 1919, in Winsted Township, McLeod County, to Louis and Josephine (Lamott) Ruzicka. He grew up in Winsted Township and attended country schools. After school, he helped on the family farm.
Ray was inducted into the US Army during World War 11.
He was united in marriage to Lillian Helen “Billie” Gritz Oct. 14, 1942, in Buffalo.
The couple owned and operated the Town Club in Silver Lake for a number of years. They then purchased a farm between Silver Lake and Winsted, where Raymond raised cattle.
Ray, his mother, Billie, and his brother, Clifford and wife Leona owned and operated the Blue Note Ballroom in Winsted for many years.
After selling the Blue Note Ballroom 40 years ago, Ray kept busy doing a number of things including operating a peanut route and fishing at his lake cabin on Birch Lake near Hackensack.
He enjoyed tinkering with woodworking and refinishing furniture, as well as wintering in Brownsville, TX for five years.
A member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, Raymond also belonged to the Knight of Columbus Council 8253, Winsted American Legion Post 407, the Catholic Order of Foresters, and was a former member of Silver Lake American Legion Post 141.
Ray has been a resident at St. Mary’s Care Center for the past four and one-half years.
He is survived by his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Leroy “Hans” and wife Joan Gritz of San Diego, CA.; and several nieces and nephews.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Josephine Ruzicka; wife Lillian “Billie” Oct. 31, 2004; brother Clifford and his wife Leona; and three nephews, Raymond Schermann, Ralph Ruzicka, and Kenneth Gritz.
