Willard S. Strandquist Obituary – 12/10/2010


Willard S. Strandquist, age 90, of Oster (rural Mayer), died Friday, Dec. 10, 2010, at Elim Home in Watertown.

He was born July 25, 1920, in Oster, the son of David and Esther Eklund Strandquist.

Willard graduated from Watertown High School, and later attended Minneapolis Business College.

He married Novia Sutherland Oct. 16, 1943, at the Buffalo Evangelical Covenant Church. God blessed their marriage with three children.

Willard was born and lived his entire life in the rural Oster area. He and Novia engaged in dairy farming for many years.

Willard was a lifelong, faithful member of the Oster Covenant Church.

He enjoyed fishing, especially ice fishing; and was fond of playing horseshoes in both a league and in tournaments.

He was also a board member of McLeod County’s REA.

Willard is survived by his children, Larry (Linda) Strandquist of St. Louis Park, Judy Plucker of St. Bonifacius, and Jane (Thomas) Murray of Ramsey; nine grandchildren, Heidi (Adam) Brachle, Aaron (Ginger) Murray, Thomas (Tessa) Strandquist, Kyle (Jennifer) Strandquist, Kristi, Michael and Heather Plucker, Jonathan (Elizabeth) Murray, and Jessica (Brandon) Brunkow; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Wallace Strandquist of Montrose; a sister, Ruth Deidrick of Waverly; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Louella Johnson, and Douglas and Joyce Erickson; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Novia, Dec. 28, 2006; a son-in-law, Darrell Plucker; his parents, David and Esther Strandquist; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Arthur and Hannah Sutherland; a sister-in-law, Audrey Strandquist; and a brother-in-law, Calvin “Kelly” Deidrick.

Funeral services took place Thursday, Dec. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Oster Covenant Church with Pastor Paul Kling officiating. Pianist was Mary Bailey, and vocalists were Kathleen Deidrick and Merijo Strandquist. Interment followed at the Oster Covenant Cemetery.

Visitation was Wednesday, Dec. 15 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted.

Casket bearers were Adam Brachle, Brandon Brunkow, Aaron Murray, Michael Plucker, Kyle Strandquist, and Tom Strandquist.
