Lloyd Westphal, age 91, of Howard Lake, died Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at the Good Samaritan Society Care Center in Howard Lake.
He was born April 28, 1919, in Howard Lake, the son of Frank and Hilda (Reinmuth) Westphal. Lloyd was baptized July 1, 1919, at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, by the Rev. A.L. Oetjen; and confirmed March 20, 1932, at the same church by the Rev. C.G. Seltz.
Lloyd was married to Esther Kuhlmann June 25, 1950, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie by the Rev. William Erb. This union was blessed with nine children.
The family lived and farmed north of Howard Lake.
Lloyd was a master piano teacher. He shared his talents by playing piano for the residents at the care center.
As a member of St. James Lutheran Church, he sang in the choir and was a member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Esther; parents Frank and Hilda Westphal; two sisters, Elenore (as an infant), and Helen Klatt; two brothers, Leo Westphal and Milton Westphal; and two grandsons, Edward Zastrow and Ryan Kieser.
He is survived by his children, Gloria Jean Westphal of Maple Lake, Arlen (Doris) Westphal of Montrose, Carolyn Westphal of St. Paul, Darlene (Curt) Johnson of Montrose, Lowell (Julie) Westphal of Watertown, Kevin (Marla) Westphal of Big Lake, Janice (Randy) Danner of Howard Lake, Sharon Westphal of Annandale, and Eunice (Bob) Kieser of Plymouth; sister-in-law Rose Westphal of Monticello; 14 grandchildren: Julia Zieman, Kristine Westphal, Aaron Westphal, Richard Tonn, Christopher Westphal, Krystle Payne, Alyssa Feig, Derek Feig, Doug Feig, Crystal Hoteling, Michael Westphal, Angela Westphal, Makayla Westphal, and Ericka Kieser; five great-grandchildren, Kasey Zieman, Ben Zieman, Dylan Westphal, Oliver Payne, and Kaylee Hoteling; nieces; nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.
The funeral service took place Friday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Nancy Butterfass served as organist, with special music by soloist Wendy Fie. Interment was at St. James Cemetery on Dutch Lake.
Visitation was Thursday, Nov. 18 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake, and continued Friday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
Serving as pallbearers are Richard Tonn, Aaron Westphal, Doug Feig, Derek Feig, Alyssa Feig, Erika Kieser, Kasey Zieman, and Ben Zieman.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake.
