Carroll “Kelly” Bakke, age 68, of California, formerly of Winsted, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011, at the Santa Ynez Cottage Hospital in California, with his loving family around him.
He was born Nov. 5, 1942, in Chester, SD, to Chris and Gladys Bakke. Growing up on the farm in eastern South Dakota, Kelly developed his love for tractors, farming, and cars.
In 1953, his family moved to Seattle, WA. He always missed South Dakota, and in 1958, he moved back by himself to finish his schooling.
There he met his future wife, Joanne. They were married Feb. 16, 1964, and spent their first five years of marriage moving from South Dakota, to Oklahoma, and Minnesota, before settling in Buellton, CA for the last 32 years.
Kelly was self-employed, having a drafting business in Buellton, CA. He had held a variety of positions and jobs throughout his life, including being a commercial airline mechanic, a lumber yard truck driver, and salesman and general contractor, before starting his drafting business.
His love for tractors and aircraft, both real and toys, were passions in his life. His wit, his humor, his stories, and his love for his family and friends, will forever remain in his loved ones’ memories.
Kelly is survived by his wife of 47 years, Joanne; his mother Gladys; his brother Gary; his children, Joe (May), Jason (Robin), and Krista (Nick); and five grandchildren, Nick, Annie, Sonna, Mia, and Addy.
A memorial service took place Thursday, Feb. 10 at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church in Santa Ynez, CA. Donations can be made to the Kelly Bakke Memorial at the Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 3550 Baseline Ave., Santa Ynez, CA 93460.
