Phyllis Marie Berry, age 86, of Lester Prairie, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2011, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Pierre, SD, the daughter of Ira and Pearl (Watson) Hess. Phyllis was baptized as an adult in the Christian faith. She received her education in a number of places as her family moved to various places while she was growing up.
Phyllis was united in marriage to William Berry Oct. 4, 1942, at Church of God in Eden Valley. This marriage was blessed with nine children, Judy, Keith, Billy, Sherry, Scott, Cindy, Leanne, Kelly, and Lynise.
Phyllis and William resided in Lester Prairie, and shared 50 years of marriage, until William passed away March 4, 1993.
A loving homemaker and mother, Phyllis taught Sunday school for many years and served as the president of the Church of God cemetery board.
She supported her husband with their business, Berry Cam Service.
A wonderful mother, Phyllis loved to spend time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
She was a very spiritual person, always prayerful, and faithful in her study of the Bible.
Phyllis is survived by her children, Judy Engelke and her husband, Orlin, of Plato, Keith “Skip” Berry of Winsted, Sherry Mahlstedt and her husband, Les, Cindy Machemehl and her husband, Joel, Leanne Mochinski and her husband, Mike, all of Lester Prairie, Kelly Berry of Glencoe, and Lynise Weiderholt and her husband, Alan, of Winsted; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Berry of Lester Prairie; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and numerous great-great-grandchildren.
She is further survived by siblings Lee Hess and his wife, Lorrie, of Albertville; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
In addition to her husband, William, Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Pearl Hess; sons Billy Berry, and Scott Berry; and a brother, Daryl Hess.
Funeral services took place Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 11 a.m. at Paul-McBride Funeral Chapel in Lester Prairie, with Pastor David Erbel officiating. Special music of CD selections from the family were played. Interment was at the Church of God Cemetery in Lester Prairie.
Casket bearers were Tom Engelke, Chris Mochinski, Jason Machemehl, David Berry, Alexis Weiderholt, and Amber Weiderholt.
