Elroy W. Burkowske, 72

Elroy Walter Burkowske, age 72, of New Germany, died Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at his home, after a lengthy illness.

He was born May 29, 1938, in New Germany, the son of Edwin and Lacorda (Baumann) Burkowske. Elroy was baptized June 11, 1938, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany, by the Rev. Theodore Rolf; and confirmed in his Christian faith April 6, 1952, at the same church by the Rev. Fred J. Pfotenhauer.

Elroy was united in marriage to Neola Marie “Suzy” Prough in Willow Lake Township, Redwood County, by the Rev. A. S. Bernthal at the pastor’s home.

Elroy and Suzy farmed on the Burkowske family farm until they retired from farming in 2004.

Elroy also found great enjoyment in selling seed for 23 years, and spending time visiting with his customers and other friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife and best friend, Suzy; a grandson, Jason Francis; parents, Edwin and Lacorda Burkowske; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wilbur and Laura Prough.

Elroy is survived by his loving family: children and spouses, Debbie and Randy Markanich of Luray, VA, Lori and Neal Barton of Woodbury, Jeffrey Burkowske, Bruce Burkowske, both of Winsted, Shari Burkowske of Watertown, Shelley and Rob Stark of Monticello, and Carl Burkowske of Bloomington; grandchildren John, Jenny, Tricia, Ify, Kenny, and Lilly; great-grandchildren Brittany, Blake, Avery, Tyrone, Johnni, and Angelia Marie; an aunt, Glenna Lehrke; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service took place Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany with the Rev. LeRoy LaPlant officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Visitation was Tuesday, Feb. 22 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.; and continued Wednesday one hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers were Ronald Lehrke, Scott Millerbernd, Brett Martinson, Edward Ekdahl, Dale Lyrek, and Steve Hafemann.
