George Raymond Campbell, age 96, of Waconia, formerly of Watertown, died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will take place Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Watertown.
There will be a gathering of family and friends Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church, and also Wednesday, one hour prior to the Mass. Inurnment with military honors will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
The Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia is handling the arrangements.
George was born Dec. 2, 1914, in Ray, N.D., to George and Mary (Cebulla) Campbell.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was honorably discharged Dec. 2 of 1945.
George and his family moved to Hollywood Township, where they purchased a farm and ran the Hollywood Store.
George was united in marriage to Dorothy “Dot” G. Salonek Jan. 10, 1950.
He and his brother, Lloyd, ran an excavating business for many years. Upon Lloyd’s death, George continued with the dirt business.
George and Dot had a green thumb. They grew large vegetable and flower gardens that were award-winning.
In his later years, George became an avid puzzle person, always having one in the works.
George was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy “Dot”; and siblings Felix Campbell, Grace Blackketter, Lloyd Campbell, Katherine Campbell, Theresa Craig, and Florence Ketcher.
He is survived by his sons, Rick (Kathy), and Jeff.
