Edmund E. Ehrke, 79

Edmund Everett Ehrke, age 79, of Glencoe, died Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2011, at the Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.

He was born June 22, 1932, in Helen Township, Plato, the son of Carl and Lorna (Mathews) Ehrke. Edmund was baptized July 14, 1932, by the Rev. Hafermann at Friedens County Line, and was confirmed at the same church by the Rev. Schild April 14, 1946.

Edmund attended Plato School District through the eighth grade.

He served in the US Army from Dec. 9, 1952 to Dec. 9, 1954.

Edmund was united in marriage to Glendora (Birkholz) Oct. 23, 1954, by the Rev. Heyne at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia. This marriage was blessed with two children, Debra (Ehrke) Dettmann and Eugene Ehrke.

The family lived on the Ehrke family farm until 2008, when they moved to Millie Beneke Manor in Glencoe. Edmund and Glendora shared 56 years of marriage.

Edmund was a farmer on the Ehrke family farm.

He was a civic-minded man who enjoyed making a difference. For over 40 years, he served on various committees and boards, including: The McLeod County Pork Producers, Lester Prairie Farmers Coop Elevator, McLeod County Coop Power, and the Helen Township Board.

Edmund was a member of Legion Post 641 of Plato for 57 years; and a lifetime member of Friedens County Line Church, where he served several terms on the church council.

Later on, he used his strong voice to call bingo numbers for the residents at Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care.

Edmund and his wife, Glendora enjoyed fishing, dancing, playing cards, and representing his boards on various trips. Whether it was mess sergeant in the army, catering functions, frying pork chops, or stirring up a pot of soup in his own kitchen, he delighted in cooking for others. His family was first and foremost and he enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Edmund was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Lorna Ehrke; a grandson, Michael Ehrke; son-in-law John Dettmann; brother-in-law Howard Victorian; and sister-in-law, Veldora Mathews.

He is survived by beloved wife Glendora Ehrke; children Debbie Dettmann and Eugene Ehrke (fiancée Joanie); grandchildren Jennifer Bartley (husband Mike), Jeff Dettmann (wife Jessica), and Cassandra and Joey Ehrke; great-grandchildren Gracelynn and Elias Bartley, and Savanah Dettmann; and brother-in-law Roylan and Leola Schmidt, Norman Mathews, Lee and Susie Birkholz, Jon and Sylvia Radtke; as well as nieces, nephews, and other relatives, and friends.

The funeral service took place Monday, Sept. 26 at 2 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Plato with the Revs. Bill Baldwin and Joe Clay officiating. Interment was in the Ferguson Cemetery in Norwood Young America.

Visitation was Sunday, Sept. 25 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church, and continued Monday one hour prior to the funeral service.

Casket bearers were Jeff Debner, Jeff Hechsel, Rodney Mathews, Randy Mathews, Greg Stuedemann, and Homer Martin.
