Jerome Leonard Engel, age 79, of Howard Lake, died Sunday, May 1, 2011, at Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
He was born March 23, 1932, in Minneapolis, the son of Leonard and Emma (Stueven) Engel. A lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake, Jerome was baptized April 24, 1932, by the Rev. C.G. Seltz; and confirmed in his faith April 14, 1946, by the Rev. Theodore Melinat.
Jerome graduated from Howard Lake High School in 1950.
Growing up on a farm, he became skilled in dairy and the agricultural business.
Jerome married Lois Carlson June 11, 1954, at the Mission Covenant Church in Dassel. This marriage was blessed with four children.
They made their home on a farm south of Howard Lake. As a dairyman, Jerome milked cows until 1988, and farmed the land until 1998.
Upon retiring, he enjoyed traveling with Lois and their daughter, Deborah. Jerome also enjoyed sports, watching his sons and grandchildren participate at various levels of basketball, football, and baseball. Spending time with his family and grandchildren was especially important to him.
Jerome was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Emma Engel; infant sister Eunice Engel; and daughter Deborah Engel-Baxter.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lois, of Howard Lake; three sons, Brian (Sandra) Engel of Eden Prairie, Timothy Engel of Lakeville, and Joel (Karen) Engel of Chaska; son-in-law Gordon Baxter of Hopkins; grandchildren Brooke Engel, Scott (Angie) Engel, Derrick Engel, Kaylee Engel, Sean Engel, Colin Baxter, and Andrew Engel and Taylor Engel; sisters-in-law Ethelyn Carlson, and June (Delmond) Borg; nieces; nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.
A celebration of Jerome’s life took place Friday, May 6 at 11 a.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Music was provided by Michael Borg as the soloist, and Nancy Butterfass as the organist. Interment was at the Howard Lake Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jerome’s grandchildren; Brooke Engel, Scott Engel, Derrick Engel, Colin Baxter, Kaylee Engel, Andrew Engel, Sean Engel, and Taylor Engel.
Visitation was Thursday, May 5 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.; and continued Friday one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.
Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake.
