Curtis Randall Erickson, age 71, of Palisade, died Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin.
He was born Nov. 5, 1939, in Cokato, to Vernon and Helmi (Mattila) Erickson. Curtis was baptized at Dassel Mission Covenant Church, and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at First Lutheran Church in Dassel.
He graduated from Dassel High School in 1958.
Curtis was a US Marine Corps veteran.
He worked for his parents hatchery, Minnesota Poultry Service, in Dassel.
Curtis attended BCA school and became a police officer for the communities of Pine Island, Maple Lake, Cokato, and Dassel.
He then worked for 3-M Company in Hutchinson, retiring after 27 years of employment.
Curtis was united in marriage to Barbara (Anderson) Jan. 29, 1971, in Dassel.
Curtis loved sports, playing basketball for Cokato, Dassel and Kingston teams, and also in the Marine Corps. He coached various youth and adult sports teams, and was an avid fisherman, hunter, camper, swimmer, and bowler, and enjoyed playing cards and watching any and all sports on TV.
Some of his greatest joys were his children and grandchildren and the accomplishments they achieved.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; children Lynn (John) Sowders of Springtown, TX, Nicole (Brian) Smith of Palisade, Chantelle (Matt) Erickson of Colorado Springs, CO, and Todd (Anne) Erickson of Columbus, OH; and grandchildren Sarah (Scott) Neely, Mariah Sowders, Joseph Sowders, Geoffrey Sowders, Amisty Smith, Amira Smith, Race Smith, Darian Erickson, Hannah Erickson, Elijah Erickson, Alesha Bergmann, Bethany Bowen, and Izaak Bowen.
Curtis is further survived by two brothers, Robert “Bob” Erickson of Braham, and Roger (Marvel) Erickson of Hutchinson; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, Bryce Erickson; nephew Chad Erickson; and his parents, Vernon and Helmi (Mattila) Erickson.
A celebration of Curtis’ life for friends and family took place Saturday, July 2 at 1 p.m.at his home in Palisade. Inurnment will be in Grace Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kingston at a later date.
