Terry Russell Ernst, age 71, of Lester Prairie, entered his eternal rest Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
He was born March 29, 1940, in Lester Prairie, the son of Everett and Viola (Pinske) Ernst. Terry was baptized as an infant April 14, 1940, by the Rev. Ernst H. Stahlke at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie; and was confirmed in his faith May 30, 1954, by the Rev. A. H. Fellwock at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glencoe.
He attended Lester Prairie Public School, Brownton Public School, and graduated from Glencoe High School in 1958. After graduation, he attended Mankato State.
Terry was united in marriage to Phyllis Braun May 7, 1966, by the Rev. William J. Altmann at Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake. This marriage was blessed with two sons, Charles and Bradley. The couple made their home in Lester Prairie, and shared 45 years of marriage.
Terry was employed by Johnson Funeral Chapel, Wilson Meats, Pat Patton Dry Cleaning, and Home Gas of Hutchinson and Montevideo before accepting the manager position for a farm fertilizer and chemical company, Cominco American, in Lester Prairie. After 30 years in that position, he was employed by Waconia Farm Supply until his retirement in 2003.
In 1988, Terry was elected president of the Minnesota Plant and Chemical Association.
A lifelong member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, Terry he served as a trustee and was on the board of education.
He was a member of the Hutchinson Fire Department, where he was chief of the rescue squad; and served on the board of directors for the Lester Prairie Sportsman’s Club, on the Lester Prairie City Council, and on the Lester Prairie Fire Department. For 25 years, Terry was also a firearms safety instructor.
Terry’s other interests included deer hunting at Roseau, duck hunting, and fishing with his grandchildren, Blake and Alexandra. He loved to spend weekends at his summer home on Lake Manuella, where Terry’s family were often treated to his grilling masterpieces, and especially enjoyed his barbeque ribs.
Terry is survived by his wife, Phyllis Ernst of Lester Prairie; son Bradley Ernst and his wife, Christine, of Lester Prairie; grandchildren Blake Ernst and Alexandra Ernst; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Doris Kletscher of Waconia, Grace Lackmann and her husband, Ken, of Prior Lake, and Betty Braun of Hutchinson; uncle and godfather Ray Pinske; aunts, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Ernst; parents Everett and Viola Ernst; father and mother-in-law Alfred and Cora Braun; and brothers-in-law Donald Braun and Murl Kletscher.
Funeral services took place Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Eric Nelson officiated at the services, organist was Marsha Christenson, and congregational hymns were “How Great Thou Art,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” and “Just As I Am.”
Honorary casket bearers were Michele Braun, and Kristine Kriegel.
