Lloyd Max Geertgen, age 97, of Lester Prairie, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2011, at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia.
He was born Oct. 13, 1913, in Johnson, MN, the son of Gerhard and Gertrude (Oestreich) Geertgen. Lloyd was baptized as an infant Nov. 2, 1913, by the Rev. J.C. Siegler, and was confirmed in his faith as a youth Sept. 16, 1928, by the Rev. E.H. Bruns, both at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Delano.
Lloyd attended Watertown Country School.
He was united in marriage to Marcella Seemann Jan. 19, 1941, by the Rev. Staheke at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. This marriage was blessed with two children, Dianne and Paul. The couple made their home in Lester Prairie, and shared 70 years of marriage.
Out of school, Lloyd held different odd jobs and then after his marriage, started hauling milk for area farmers. He owned two trucks and retired from hauling milk for Bongards Creamery in Bongards, after 43 years.
After retirement, Lloyd continued doing odd jobs, and worked at Fred Holasek & Son Greenhouse in Lester Prairie.
He was an active member at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.
Lloyd enjoyed fishing and playing cards. He cherished the time spent with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella Geertgen of Lester Prairie; daughter Dianne Dobe of Princeton; grandsons David Dobe and his wife, Diane, of Sartell, and Michael Dobe and his wife, Kathy, of Rochester; great-grandchildren Kacy Dobe, Miranda Dobe, Tyson Dobe, and Zeke Dobe; great-great-grandchild Jaidyn Dobe; a brother, Larry Geertgen of Rhinelander, WI; sister-in-law Carrie Kempfert of Hopkins; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and many friends.
Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Gerhard and Gertrude Geertgen; a son, Paul Geertgen; and a sister, Florence Reimer.
Funeral services took place Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. David Erbel officiated. Organist was Jane Holasek. Soloist: Alan Holasek sang “On Eagle’s Wings.” Congregational hymns included “Beautiful Savior,” “Just As I Am,” and “How Great Thou Art.”
Casket bearers were David Dobe, Michael Dobe, Zeke Dobe, Merrill Kempfert, David Dibb, and Tom Smilanich.
