Vernon D. Guetzkow, 91

Vernon D. Guetzkow, age 91, of New Germany, died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2011, at the Glencoe Regional Health Services Long Term Care Unit.

He was born Dec. 20, 1919, the son of Fred and Selma (Gatz) Guetzkow. Vernon was baptized Jan. 4, 1920; and confirmed April 9, 1932, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Theodore Rolf.

Vernon was united in marriage to Florence A. Luebke May 15, 1943, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany by the Rev. Meyer.

A loving husband, dad, grandpa, and papa, Vernon enjoyed playing cards, listening to polka music, and could fix anything pertaining to wood projects.

He was very involved at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany, where he served as trustee, and counting money after Sunday service. He also was on the school board for District 110 in New Germany.

Vernon was a courier for Security Bank in New Germany, and bagged groceries at Mackenthun’s in Waconia.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence Guetzkow; daughter Janice Schafer; son-in-law Dale Hamann; parents Fred and Selma Guetzkow; grandson Josh Landin, brother Loren Guetzkow; and brother-in-law Elmer Luebke.

Vernon is survived by his loving family; daughter Karen Hamann of Hutchinson; son-in-law Robert Schafer of Shelby Twp., MI; grandchildren Lisa and Joe Sherwood, and Wendy and Dennis Geyen, all of Waconia; great-grandchildren Madison Sherwood, Connor Sherwood, Nicholas Geyen, and Benjamin Geyen; sister-in-law Gladys Luebke of Mayer; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service was Friday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m. St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany with the Rev. LeRoy LaPlant officiating. Interment was at Crow River Cemetery, New Germany.

Visitation took place Thursday, Nov. 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the church, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and continued Friday for one hour prior to the service.

Casket bearers were Mark Luebke, Brian Luebke, Zach Luebke, Dean Adams, Lonnie Venske, and David Effertz.
