James (Jimmy) Lester Harmening, age 65, of Orrock, MN, passed away peacefully, at his home Sunday, May 22, 2011, after battling cancer.
He was born May 24, 1945, to Lester and Dorothy (Brown) Harmening in New Ulm, and was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
He grew up on a farm west of Klossner, MN, and was active in 4-H and FFA, earning many participation awards. He attended New Ulm High School.
Jimmy served in the US Navy from 1963-1966 on a supply ship during the early years of the Vietnam War.
He was a member of the Lake Mary VFW Post 9232 in Winsted, and held several different positions.
Jimmy worked most of his life in factories and in construction. He has lived in St. Paul, International Falls, Winsted, Howard Lake, and the past several years in Orrock, which is near Big Lake.
Jimmy loved fishing and hunting, and old-time country music. He was a fan of the Vikings, Twins, and NASCAR racing.
His marriage to Audrey Braulick was blessed with four daughters; Tammy (Scott) Riley of Int’l Falls, Tracey Nelson of Int’l Falls, Debra (Chris) Lepper of Somerset WI, and Rebecca (Barrett) Olson of Int’l Falls. Jim has seven grandchildren; Derek and Nicholas Riley, Shelby Harmening, Emma and Peter Lepper, and Parker and Emmitt Olson.
He is lovingly remembered by partner Jan King and her family; brother John (Susan) Harmening of Brainerd; sisters Jeanne (Jim) Albrecht of New Ulm, Janice (John) Snyder of Savage, and Julie (Carl) Sarff of Chaska; uncles Clarence Ahlberg, Richard Lundquist, and James Wilking; aunt Lucille Lundquist; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
James was preceded in death by his father, Lester Harmening; and mother, Dorothy Schugel.
Memorial services took place Saturday, May 28 at 11 a.m. at Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, with the Rev. Mark Loder officiating. Inurnment followed at 3 p.m. at the New Ulm Cemetery.
Visitation was Saturday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the funeral home.
Honorary pallbearers were Gary Streich, Don Bickmann, Jeff Bickmann, Robert Bergemann, Douglas Bergemann, David Wilking, Dale Wilking, and Roger Ketchmark.
