Valarie M. “Val” Hertzog, age 82, of Winsted, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at St. Mary’s Care Center.
She was born Oct. 27, 1929, (a twin) at Mounds Park Hospital in St. Paul, the daughter of August Aloyious and Isabel Alvina (Enke) Kampa.
Valarie was a 1947 graduate of Humboldt High School. She continued her education, being affiliated with Bemidji Hospital and St. Peter State Hospital.
Valarie was joined in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony to Albin W. Hertzog Oct. 29, 1955, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted. God blessed their marriage with four children.
Val received her nursing degree from St. Catherine College Division of St. Joseph Hospital in St. Paul in 1950, and began a long and dedicated career as a registered nurse. She began her nursing profession at the Glencoe Hospital, and joined St. Mary’s Hospital of Winsted at its inception.
The 13 acres of land on which St. Mary’s was built was originally owned by Valarie’s father-in-law and mother-in-law, Martin and Rosa (Kohler) Hertzog. This property was sold to the hospital association, donating half of the value.
A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Valarie was a special individual who dedicated her life to taking care of others, especially her family.
A member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, she was active in the choir and the St. Ann’s Society. She was also a member of the Winsted American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post 407.
Val relished faith, family, dancing, photography, reading, playing bingo, traveling, going to the casino, and feeding and watching the birds, and she was an enthusiastic Minnesota Twins fan.
She was a very strong and amazing woman, and journeyed through life with Familial Adenumatous Polyposis (FAP). Thirty years ago, she was a passenger in a fatal car accident that claimed the lives of two co-workers and close friends, Verla Rathmanner and Delores Sexton. Also in the accident was Airi Davidson. Valarie was hospitalized in critical condition for three months at Hennepin County Medical Center.
She was a 12-year pancreatic cancer survivor, and lost a courageous battle with a second reoccurrence of colon cancer.
Val is survived by her children, Jim (Julie) Hertzog of Watertown, Martin (Kathy) Hertzog of Winsted, and Rita (Eugene) Boehlke of Waverly; grandchildren Monica, Laura, David, Grace, Jenna, Stephanie, Michelle, Sarah, Brittani, Bridget and Eugene Jr.; great-grandchildren Amelia, Parker, Zachary, Samuel, Sydney, Joshua, Olivia and Nevaeh; as well as many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albin W. Hertzog in 1993; her daughter, Diane M. Hertzog in 2003; her parents; her twin sister (Vivian M.) Sr. Grace Marie CSJ; and her brother, SGT Richard K. Kampa, AAF.
Mass of Christian Burial took place Saturday, Nov. 26 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted with Fr. Tony Hesse celebrating the Mass. Interment was next to her husband in Holy Trinity Cemetery.
Visitation was Saturday morning, Nov. 26 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted.
Casket bearers were Scott Kennedy, Eugene Boehlke Jr., Steven Bobrowske, and Gary Eastling.
