Ethel I. Hess Obituary – 7/6/2011


Ethel Irene Hess, age 88, of Cokato, died Wednesday, July 6, 2011, at Birchwood Hospice House in Hutchinson.

The funeral service will take place Monday, July 11 at 11 a.m. at Stockholm Lutheran Church, rural Cokato, with interment in the church cemetery.

Visitation was Sunday, July 10 from 5 to 8 p.m. at Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and will continue Monday for one hour prior to the service at the church.

The Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Cokato is handling the arrangements.

Ethel was born June 26, 1923, in Cokato, to Carl and Anna (Nevala) Terning. She grew up in Cokato, and was baptized and confirmed at the Finnish Apostolic Lutheran Church.

Ethel married Omar Hess in 1940 at The Little Brown Church in Iowa.

She attended Anoka Ramsey Community College, earning her LPN degree; and worked at the Hutchinson hospital for a number of years.

Omar and Ethel did dairy farming in Glenwood City, WI, and crop farming in Minnesota areas. They moved to town in 1980, and spent winters at their home in Tucson, AZ.

Ethel enjoyed sewing, music and gardening, and spending time with her birthday club and sewing club friends. She was involved in her church and community.

Ethel is survived by her five daughters, Mary Ann (James) Ryan of Cokato, Katherine Jolin of Springboro, OH, Jane Ray of St. Paul, Carolyn (Dr. Carl) Cole of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and Brenda Hess of Redondo Beach, CA; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; seven brothers and sisters; and a son- in-law, Dr. Timothy Jolin.
