Harold G. Hill, 96

Harold G. Hill, age 96, of Mayer, died Thursday May 5, 2011, at the Harbor in Norwood Young America.

He was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Mayer, the son of Fred and Louisa (Schumacher) Hill. Harold was baptized Sept. 13, 1914, and confirmed April 1, 1928, at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer by the Rev. F.W. Erthal.

Harold was united in marriage to Edna W. Stuewe Oct. 5, 1941, at Zion Lutheran Church in Benton Township, Cologne, by the Rev. Herman AmEnd.

A family man, family came first to Harold and was very important to him. He loved taking care of his wife, Edna.

Harold farmed his entire life and was a great fix-it man, working on many different things.

He enjoyed playing cards, wood working, fishing, reading, gardening, cooking, and just staying busy around the farm. He also had a great sense of humor.

Harold believed in Christian education and was involved in the ground breaking for Lutheran High School. He was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church, sang in the church choir, attended Bible study, served on the church council, was part of Lutheran Laymen’s League, and played in the dart ball league.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Edna; granddaughter Shannon Olson; grandson Joshua Hill; parents Fred and Louisa Hill; brothers Klemens and Roland Hill; and sister Cordulla Kirsch.

Harold is survived by his loving family; children and spouses, Judy and the Rev. Bob Holmbeck of Gaylord, Eunice and the Rev. Leo Deitemeyer of Fargo, ND, Fred and Susan Hill of Thompson, MO, Ranae and Al Burtman, Mark and Debbie Hill, all of Mayer, and Brian and Anita Hill of Kenosha, WI; grandchildren Brenda and Scott Schmitz, David and Paula Holmbeck, Peter and Suzie Holmbeck, Tim and Tina Deitemeyer, Matt and Zida Deitemeyer, Tina Deitemeyer, Mary and Jason Bonde, Tammy and Dale Willis, Tracy and Jim White, Tony and Kelli Hill, Nate and Heather Burtman, Jill and Blake Hahn, Anne Burtman, Stephanie and Jerry Paumen, Jennifer and Matt Hoernemann, Steve and Jessica Morrissette, Valerie and Kendall Steele, Amanda Hill, Jamie Hill, Michael Hill, Stephanie Starling, Samantha Starling, and Jake Starling; and 44 great-grandchildren.

He is further survived by a sister, Paula Plocher of Mankato; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Dorothy Hill of Arizona, Bob and Marion Stuewe of Cologne, and Norma Stuewe of Belle Plaine; nieces; nephews; and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service took place Saturday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church in Mayer with the Rev. Adam Gless officiating, with interment in the church cemetery.

Visitation was from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.

Casket bearers were Harold’s grandsons: David Holmbeck, Peter Holmbeck, Tim Deitemeyer, Matt Deitemeyer, Tony Hill, Nate Burtman, Stephanie Paumen, and Jamie Hill. His other grandchildren were honorary casket bearers.
