Earl W. Machemehl, 82

Earl Winfred Machemehl, age 82, of Lester Prairie, passed away unexpectedly Monday, April 18, 2011, at his home.

He was born Nov. 11, 1928, in Lester Prairie, the son of Conrad and Elsie (Tonn) Machemehl. Earl was baptized as an infant Nov. 25, 1928, by the Rev. J. A. Schert, and confirmed in his faith March 29, 1942, by the Rev. Vomhof, both at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie.

Earl grew up on the family farm and attended rural country school, graduating from Lester Prairie High School with the class of 1946.

He entered active military service in the US Army in February of 1953, and served his country in the Korean War, receiving an honorable discharge in December of 1954.

Earl was united in marriage to Betty Rommel June 9, 1951, by the Rev. R.A. Ritz at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie. This marriage was blessed with four daughters, Lori, Kristine, Teri, and Kerri Jo.

The couple made their home on the farm and later moved to White Bear Lake, and then Lester Prairie. Earl and Betty shared over 59 years of marriage.

Earl farmed and then held employment as a salesman at Natro Gas Company in Silver Lake, Western Gas in Delano, and finished with Xcel Energy as their vice president.

He was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, where he served as an elder and on the church school board.

Earl was also a member of the Lester Prairie American Legion Post 463 and Lester Prairie Lions Club. He was on the 1950 Lester Prairie Baseball Town Team that won at state.

Earl enjoyed fishing, dancing, mowing the lawn, and watching the Twins. He taught himself to play the concertina, harmonica, and piano. Earl loved spending time at the cabin and you would always find him whistling. He cherished the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren; and friends.

Earl is survived by his wife, Betty Machemehl of Lester Prairie; daughters Lori Santillo and her husband, Chris, of Ham Lake, Kristine Willmsen and her husband, Mike, of Arlington, Teri Blasko and her husband, Scott, of Rogers, and Kerri Jo Morgando and her husband, Deric, of Eagan; grandchildren Adam Boehlke and his wife, Cassie, Stefanie Santillo, Natalie Santillo, Eric Brockhoff, Erin Brockhoff, Ryan Blasko, Kaylee Blasko, Caiden Morgando, and Mahryn Morgando; and great-grandchildren, Parker Santillo, and Jordyn Santillo.

Earl is further survived by his sisters, Irma Smith of Waconia, and Shirley Dibb of Lester Prairie; brother Ralph Machemehl and his wife, Donna, of Lester Prairie; sisters-in-law Marvanna Machemehl of Winsted, Donna Aust of Elk River, and Joni Christopher and her husband, Walter, of New Hope; brothers-in-law Wayne Rommel and his wife, Jo, of Remer, and James Rommel and his wife, Sue, of Edina; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents, Conrad and Elsie Machemehl; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Clinton and Irene Rommel; son-in-law Virgil Brockhoff; brother Louis Machemehl; and brothers-in-law Bill Smith, Wally Dibb, Jim Aust, and Ardin Gutzmann.

Funeral services took place Saturday, April 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie, with interment in the church cemetery. The Rev. Eric Nelson officiated. Organist was Marsha Christenson; and soloist Samantha Wortman sang “On Eagle’s Wings” and “You Raise Me Up.” Congregational hymns were “Amazing Grace” and “How Great Thou Art.”

Casket bearers were Joel Machemehl, Jeff Machemehl, Jim Machemehl, Jonn Machemehl, Gregg Machemehl, Kent Dibb, Kirk Dibb, and Phil Rommel
