Dean F. Mielke, age 53, of San Jose, CA, formerly of Howard Lake, died Saturday, April 30, 2011, in California.
He was born May 19, 1957, the son of Arnold and Ruth (Davis) Mielke. Dean was baptized June 30, 1957, at St. James Lutheran Church, Howard Lake; and confirmed in his faith May 23, 1971, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Mankato.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy, class of 1979, Dean served active duty from 1979 to 1990, and in the Reserves from 1991 to 2007. His career included construction manager/senior project manager with M.A. Mortenson Company, University of Kansas, The Seville Group, Kitchell Capital Expenditure Managers, Lieutenant Colonel, US Army Corp of Engineers and Quartermaster Corps.
Volunteering was important to Dean. Singing in the church choir and traveling to South America on a church mission trip were some of the ways he enjoyed serving others.
“Duty, honor, country” he always lived up to that.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Arnold and Ruth Mielke.
He is survived by a sister, Marilyn McLeod; and two brothers, Thomas Mielke and Keith Mielke.
A celebration of his life took place Saturday, Oct. 15 at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Interment was at the St. James Lutheran Church Cemetery on Dutch Lake, with military honors provided by the Howard Lake American Legion.
