Herbert William Nystrom, Jr., age 78, of Delano, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, in Panama City, FL at Bay Medical Hospital.
He was born Aug. 3, 1932, in Mason, WI to Herbert and Margaret (Olson) Nystrom. Herb graduated from Ondossagon High School in Washburn, WI in 1950.
Herb served in the US Army and was stationed in Korea during the Korean War.
He married Luella C. Broten of Ashland, WI in 1956.
Herb received his associates degree in mortuary science from the University of Minnesota in 1958. He worked for several years as a funeral director in Minneapolis, Laverne, Waseca, and Atwater.
An entrepreneur, Herb and Luella launched several businesses in Delano, beginning in the late 1960s, and managed them until his death.
Herbert was very active in the Delano Lion’s Club, Delano Chamber of Commerce, and Delano Legion Post 377; sponsored several Miss Delano contestants, served as scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 273, and sponsored a local men’s softball team called “Nystrom’s Recliners” that competed in the national tournament.
He enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife, Luella. They visited several destinations including the Bahamas, Bermuda, Hawaii, Jamaica, and Tahiti.
Herbert took great pride in his family, especially his five grandchildren.
He is survived by two children, Scott V. Nystrom (wife Sharon) of Gaithersburg, MD, and Greg Nystrom (wife Lynn) of Royalston, MA; five grandchildren, Samantha Nystrom, Stuart Nystrom, Spencer Nystrom, Brent Nystrom, and Jackie Nystrom; seven sisters, Beatrice Landman of Texas, Lois (Bob) Cleveland of California, Marion (Elmer) Westlund, Maxine Sawyer, all of Wisconsin; Jane Nordin of Minnesota, and Joan Koch of Florida; and dozens of nieces and nephews.
Herb was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, Luella C. Nystrom; his parents; and three brothers, Willard, Howard, and John (Jack) Nystrom.
The funeral was Thursday, Feb. 3 at noon at Lakewood Memorial Chapel in Minneapolis.
Visitation was Wednesday, Feb. 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the Iten Funeral Home in Delano, and continued Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to noon at the Lakewood Memorial Chapel,
