James Victor Ostlund, age 83, of Dassel, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2011, at the Lakeside Health Care Center of Dassel.
He was born April 19, 1928, on the family farm in the Lake Jennie community, the son of Victor and Esther (Settergren) Ostlund. James grew up and attended the Lake Jennie school, and then graduated from Dassel High School in 1946.
He was confirmed at the Lake Jennie Covenant Church, and was baptized and presently a member of the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel.
James was united in marriage to Shirley Johnson June 21, 1950, at the First Lutheran Church in Dassel. They made their home on the family farm, where they were blessed with five children.
James loved the land and was a successful farmer. He could often be found in the barn or on his tractor working the field.
James enjoyed spending time with his family, especially for the holidays. He loved music, was a talented piano player and singer, and enjoyed whistling while he was on his tractor or working in the barn. He also sang in the Gethsemane Church choir for more than three decades.
An avid sportsman, in the fall James could be found in a duck blind with his retriever dog on Fallon Lake, scanning the sky for ducks, or in his stand hunting for deer with either a rifle or black powder muzzleloader. During the summer, he and Shirley enjoyed fishing “up north” to test the waters for that elusive walleye.
A talented woodworker, James made numerous bluebird and wood duck houses. He loved to write about his family and community history, and for many years wrote journal entries chronicling daily life. He was also a talented story teller and artist, sharing his art and his love for history and wildlife with school and college classrooms.
A devoted public servant, James served on numerous boards, including the Gethsemane Lutheran Church Council, Meeker County Park Board, Collinwood Township Board, Collinwood Mutual Insurance Board, and Lake Jennie School Board. He also served as a Meeker County Fire Warden for many years, and enjoyed being a member of the Lake Jennie Bowling Team.
James is survived by his wife, Shirley Ostlund of Dassel; children Kevin (Karen) Ostlund, Janis Rannow, Arlyce (Dave) Terning, all of Hutchinson; Orin Ostlund, and Brent Ostlund (fiancée Carolyn Morgan), all of Dassel; 12 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife’s parents, Arthur and Elsie (Kaer) Johnson; a granddaughter, Angela Terning; a great-granddaughter, Ariana Woetzel; and siblings, Florence (Norman) Jensen, Margaret (George) Johnson, Mae (Warren) Nelson, Raymond Ostlund, and an infant brother.
The funeral service took place Wednesday, Oct. 12 at 2 p.m. at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Dassel, with the Revs. Steven Olson and John Peterson officiating. Interment was at the Lake Jennie Covenant Church Cemetery, rural Dassel.
Visitation was Tuesday evening, Oct. 11 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Dassel, and continued Wednesday for one hour prior to the service at the church.
