Duane A. Schumacher Obituary – 10/16/2011


Duane A. Schumacher, age 85, of Watertown, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2011, at his home.

He was born Aug. 1, 1926, in Mayer, the son of August and Florence (Foster) Schumacher.

Duane was a graduate of Watertown High School, class of 1944, and then graduated from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

He proudly served his country in World War II, and took great pride in being a member of the New Germany American Legion and the Watertown Lions Club.

Duane was united in marriage to Mary Thompson Nov. 7, 1953, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. Anderson officiating.

Duane loved his family, and his grandchildren meant the world to him.

He enjoyed working in his yard, spending time at the lake, and in his earlier days, he was in a bowling league; and he loved to play bridge.

Duane and Mary would travel to different destinations, looking up family history.

Duane was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; infant daughter Nancy; and brothers Kenneth and Dennis Schumacher.

He is survived by his loving family: daughters and son-in-law, Karin Schumacher of Dilworth, and Sue and Tom Weber of Burnsville; grandchildren Abby Weber, and Ben Weber; sister and brother-in-law Carol and Nick Vamvakias of Fairfax, VA; sister-in-law Luverne Schumacher of Torrence, CA; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

The funeral service took place Friday, Oct. 21 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. David Weeks officiating. Interment was at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation was Thursday, Oct. 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Trinity’s Nylunda Chapel, and continued Friday, one hour prior to the service at church.

Casket bearers were Ben Weber, Sam Balfanz, Sandra Bergum, Ralph Ertl, Gordon Venske, Fred Radde III, and Becky Schulze.
