William G. Screeden Obituary – 9/9/2011


William G. “Bill” Screeden, age 95, of Edina, passed away Friday, Sept. 9, 2011.

He was born July 17, 1916, in Osceola County, IA, and graduated from the University of Iowa June 2, 1941.

Bill was employed briefly by Iowa Power and Light Company in Des Moines, IA, prior to his induction into the US Army June 20, 1942. He proudly served his country during the World War II, and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds sustained in combat in France.

After the War, Bill was employed for 34 years by the former Aetna Casualty and Surety Company, retiring in 1979 as general manager of the Minneapolis branch office.

In retirement, Bill was an active member of Kiwanis, and of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Community in Edina.

He will be remembered for his love of golf, Iowa Hawkeye basketball and football, boating, water skiing and fishing on Lake Minnetonka and on the Whitefish Chain near Brainerd; for playing a good game of bridge with his wife and friends; and as a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Herman Screeden and Gertrude ‘Maye’ Screeden of Harris, IA; by his loving wife of 54 years, Dorothy; and a daughter-in-law, Patricia A. Screeden of St. Charles, IL.

He is survived by his sons, John (Carla) of Eagan, Jim of St. Charles, IL, and Tom (Sheila) of Delano; sister Joyce Kent of Des Moines, IA; six grandchildren, Erik, Julia, Adam, Lauren, Mira and Daniel; several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Mass of Christian Burial took place Tuesday, Sept. 13 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Edina, with visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Memorials for Bill are preferred to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

Arrangements were by Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel.
