Doris L. Slaten Obituary – 2/1/2011


Doris Loraine Slaten, age 73, of Guntersville, AL, formerly of Dassel, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2011.

She was born Sept. 5, 1937, in Collinwood Township, Dassel, to Hilding and Myrtle (Johnson) Beckman. Doris was baptized as an infant, and was confirmed in the Lake Jennie Covenant Church in Dassel.

She grew up in the Dassel area, and graduated from Dassel High School in 1955.

Doris was united in marriage to Lynn Slaten Dec. 5, 1959, at the Dassel Covenant Church, by the Rev. C. D. Anderson. At this time, Lynn was serving in the US Air Force.

A homemaker, Doris’ hobby was family history. She had done genealogy research on her family while she and her husband lived in various US cities including Minneapolis, Washington, DC, Montgomery, AL, and Colorado Springs, CO.

Doris was very proud of her Swedish heritage and could converse some in the Swedish language.

She is survived by her husband, Lynn Slaten, a retired Air Force sergeant; a son, Dale Slaten, and a daughter, Darla Slaten, both of Guntersville, AL; a sister, Velma Jorgensen of Dassel; and numerous relatives in Minnesota.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant daughter, Dawn Slaten, who was buried in Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC; and her brother-in-law, Maurice Jorgensen.

Private services were at Carr Funeral Home in Alabama, with interment in Brookwood Cemetery in Alabama.
