Simon Sterner – 8/11/2011

Simon P. Sterner, age 76, of Winsted, died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at his residence.

He was born July 7, 1935, in New Germany, the son of Fred and Amelia Neumann Sterner.

Simon honorably served his country in United States Army National Guard.

He was joined in holy marriage with Verdella T. Gueningsman Sept. 9, 1961. God blessed their marriage with six children.

In May of 1968, Simon and Verdella moved to the farm north of Winsted, where Simon had a dairy operation and later raised a variety of livestock. He also worked at Millerbernd’s, where he retired after more than 35 years of employment.

Simon enjoyed auctions, cutting wood, building pallets, and farming. He was always working; he never sat still. But when work was done, he liked to enjoy a good meal – especially ham and potatoes, followed by sweets.

Simon is survived by his children: Lori Sterner, Simon Sterner Jr., both of Winsted; Anna (Dave) Reese of Cokato, James Sterner of Winsted, Kenneth (Patty) Sterner of Dassel, and Steve Sterner of Winsted; eight grandchildren: Philip Reese (Kayla Helberg), Heather (Stan) Pererva, Kenny Sterner, Jordan Sterner, Kelsie Sterner, Kaitlyn Sterner, James Sterner and Josh Sterner; five great-grandchildren: Carmen Reese, Noah Pererva, Isaiah Pererva, Benjamin Pererva, and Brodie Reese; brothers; a sister; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Verdella; a daughter-in-law, Lisa Sterner; a granddaughter, Amanda Jax; his parents; and siblings.

A memorial service took place Sunday, Aug. 14 at 4 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, with Pastor Orval Wirkkala officiating. Special music was provided by Beth Wirkkala and Tonja Aho.

There was a time of gathering Sunday afternoon, beginning at 3 p.m., at the funeral home.

The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted served the family. Online condolences may be made to www.chilsonfuneralhome.com.
