Bess E. Strohschein Obituary – 3/15/2011


Bess Emma Strohschein, age 90, of Howard Lake, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at the Annandale Care Center.

She was born June 28, 1920, in Middleville Township, Wright County, the daughter of John and Wilhelmina (Melinsky) Marohn. Bess was baptized at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Middleville Twp. July 25, 1920, by the Rev. Alfred Streufert, and confirmed in her faith at the same church March 25, 1934, by the Rev. W.D. Kanning.

As a young woman, Bess was employed at the post office, and had also worked for other Howard Lake businesses.

She was married to Albert Strohschein Feb. 28, 1947, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church by the Rev. Herman Bentrup. Their 64 years together were blessed with two children.

Along with being a full-time homemaker, Bess loved growing flowers and gardening. She had her own greenhouse, and was a member of the Minnesota Arboretum Society. Collecting antiques and baking were also activities she enjoyed. Bess loved her grandchildren and the time spent with them and her family.

Bess was preceded in death by her parents, John and Wilhelmina Marohn; two sisters, Ruth Strohschein and Frieda Schendel; father- and mother-in-law Albert, Sr. and Augusta Strohschein; and three brothers-in-law, Leonard Strohschein, the Rev. Marcus Strohschein, and Fred Schendel.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Strohschein of Howard Lake; a son, Bruce (Shirley) Strohschein of Shakopee; a daughter, Lois Strohschein of Howard Lake; two grandchildren, Andrew (Annalisa) Strohschein and Jessica Strohschein (fiancé Matthew Volkman); nieces; nephews; and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral service took place Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m. at St. James Lutheran Church in Howard Lake with the Revs. Michael Nirva and Martin Schoenfeld officiating. Diane Johnson served as the organist. Interment was at Howard Lake Cemetery.

There was visitation one hour prior to the funeral service at the church.

Pallbearers were the Rev. David Strohschein, Dr. Jonathan Strohschein, the Rev. John Strohschein, Bob Schendel, Andrew Strohschein, and Jessica Strohschein.

Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home of Howard Lake.
