Violet Olga Tonn, age 93, of Eau Claire, WI, formerly of Howard Lake and Lester Prairie, died Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.
She was born Dec. 25, 1917, in Bergen Township, McLeod County, to Ewald and Fernadena (nee Terlinden) Bettcher, the second of 11 children. Violet was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Bergen Township.
Violet married Theodore Tonn June 12, 1935. They were blessed with one daughter, DeAnn.
Violet and Theodore farmed the Tonn family farm until 1972, when they moved to their retirement home on the lake in Howard Lake. Ted passed away in 1987, and Violet moved back to Lester Prairie in 1989, where she resided until January, 2006.
She then moved to Eau Claire to be with daughter DeAnn and her family, living at Luther Lakeside apartments until November 2010, when she moved in with her daughter’s family. She enjoyed many outings, a granddaughter’s wedding, and numerous great-grandsons’ birthday celebrations during her last five years in Eau Claire.
As an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Violet was a member of the Ladies Aid and participated in many other church activities.
In Howard Lake, she spent many hours quilting with her quilting group and enjoyed Senior Citizens with Ted.
Every place she lived, there were flowers, and she shared her green thumb enthusiasm with everyone she knew. Violet touched the lives of many, and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, DeAnn and Dan Kelly; granddaughters Meghan (Jared) Ketchens, and Bridget (Sean) Kelly-Selz; great-grandsons Daemion, Blake, and Trystan Ketches, and August Kelly-Selz; sisters Della VanStender, Florence Klaustermeier, Carol Adams and Betty (Gene) Miller; a brother, Ewald (Dorothy) Bettcher, Jr.; nine nieces; 10 nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband, Theodore, Violet was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Eunice Wainwright, Evangeline Fashing, and Derrolla Fasching; and brothers Victor and Juergen Bettcher.
A memorial service took place Saturday, March 26 at 11:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lester Prairie with the Rev. Eric Nelson officiating.
