Evelyn M. Zander, 93

Evelyn Myrtle (Jauss) Zander, age 93, of Howard Lake, died Saturday, June 18, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Home of Howard Lake.

She was born July 10, 1917, at her grandparents’ farm in Taylor ND, to Fred and Ella (Christinsen) Jauss. Evelyn was baptized July 29, 1917, at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Taylor, by the Rev. W.H. Larson; and confirmed April 20, 1930, at Christ Lutheran Church, southeast of Dickinson, ND, by Pastor William Geners.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Edward Bernard Zander April 8, 1942, at Christ Lutheran Church in Dickinson, ND, by Pastor Geners. As a bride, she came to Howard Lake with her husband, and resided north of Howard Lake for 48 years.

When Edward passed away, she moved to Howard Lake apartments July 4, 1990.

While living on the farm, Evelyn helped with the farm work, and also helped with the trucking business they operated the last 25 years they lived on the farm.

She was active in her church, St. John’s Lutheran of Howard Lake, of which she was a member of since 1942. She belonged to what was then called Ladies Aid, which did a lot of sewing; and in later years, it was called WELCA, and they made many quilts for the needy. Her family was also all remembered with quilts.

In later years, Evelyn took up crocheting, as her eyesight was failing. She made afghans for little children, (project Linus), prayer shawls, and always had dish cloths for the annual Christmas brunch. She also taught Sunday school for 25 years, helped with children’s choir, sewed gowns, and sang in the church choir.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Leroy (Sandra) Zander, and Lowell (Jeanne) Zander, all of Prescott, AZ; grandson Jason (Marjorie) Zander of Woodinville, WA; great-grandchildren Michael, Eric, and Madeline Zander; granddaughter Jill (Keith) Tutewohl of Farmington; and her sister, Ethel and family.

In addition to her husband, Edward, she was preceded in death by her parents; grandson-to-be Shane Elsen; and her niece, Linda and husband Robert Vaughn.

The funeral service took place Tuesday, June 21 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Howard Lake, followed by interment in the Howard Lake Cemetery.

Visitation was Monday, June 20 from 4 to 9 p.m. at the church, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.; and continued Tuesday one hour prior to the service.

Arrangements were by the Swanson-Peterson Funeral Home in Howard Lake.
