Adeline Gladys (Lorentson) Benson, age 90, of Watertown, died peacefully, at home, Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012.
A devoted and resourceful mother, spouse, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Adeline will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She was born Feb. 17, 1922, in Black River Township, Pennington County, MN, the daughter of Alfred D. and Josephine (Ekstrom) Lorentson. Shortly after she was born, her father sought and won public office as the registrar of deeds of Pennington County, and they sold the farm and moved into Thief River Falls.
The family was active in the Swedish Covenant Church, and the children were gifted academically and athletically. Adeline won the Thief River Falls female athlete of the year trophy, was a standout tennis player, and a talented swimmer and golfer.
After graduation from high school in 1939, she attended St. Olaf College for two years, and then returned home to work for her dad.
Adeline was united in marriage with Joseph L. Benson Nov. 4, 1943, at the Mission Covenant Church in Thief River Falls. This union lasted 62 years and produced four children.
The family resided in Balaton from 1946 to 1955, where Louie taught English and social studies; Evansville from 1955 to 1966, where Louie was first, principal, and then, superintendent of schools; and finally Watertown, from 1966 to the present. Louie retired there in 1979.
Adeline brought a keen intelligence and commitment to parenting and family life, to her many friendships, to church, and community activities. She was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown for over 46 years.
A generous hostess, Adeline also loved bridge, golf, swimming, and travel. She and Louis swam three mornings a week and golfed into their middle 80s.
Adeline was a woman of great beauty, dignity, humor, and integrity and remained vigorous and engaging to the end of her days.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph “Louie” Benson; parents Alfred and Josephine (Ekstrom) Lorentson; and brothers Adrian, Donald and Lennert Lorentson.
Adeline is survived by her loving family; children Donald (Dawn) Benson of Farming, Susan (Gary) Rettke of Blaine, Thomas Benson of Fairbanks, AK, and James (Konnie) Benson of St. Cloud; grandchildren Leah and Dan Malmgren, Naomi Rettke and Dave Bachman, Philip Rettke, Amy Gunderson, Keith Benson, Christopher Sjogren, and Jenna Benson; and great-grandchildren Madeline and Avery Christenson, Hannah, Luke and Rachel Malmgren, and Diego and Josephine Bachman.
Adeline is further survived by sisters-in-law Marguerite Lorentson of Ludington, MI, and Margaret Benson of Fresno, CA; nieces; nephews; other relatives, including cousins Muriel Peterson, Kenneth Swanson and Shirley Sorvig of Thief River Falls ,and Lorraine Sjulson of New Braunfels, TX; and friends.
A memorial service took place Saturday, Sept. 29 at 11 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Watertown with the Rev. David Weeks officiating.
Visitation was Friday, Sept. 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church, and continued Saturday one hour prior to the service.
