Winfield J. Brand, 83

Winfield “Win” J. Brand, age 83, of Dassel, formerly of Cokato, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2012, at Augustana Lakeside Health Care Center in Dassel.

His funeral service will be Saturday, Dec. 1 at 1 p.m. at Cokato Evangelical Lutheran Church, with visitation for one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow at Swedish Mission cemetery in Buffalo.

Memorials preferred to Aldersgate United Methodist Church of St. Louis Park and Cokato Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He was born June 26, 1929, in Sibley, IA, the son of Edith (Johnson) and Winfield T. Brand. Win had polio at the age of 18 months.

He attended elementary school in Sibley, then moved to Minneapolis, where he attended Minneapolis Vocational-Technical School, specializing in jewelry, graduating in 1947.

Following graduation, Winfield began working at Kirchner’s as an apprentice diamond setter. While there, he set a diamond tiara for the Miss Minnesota contest.

Win married Muriel Gerard June 20, 1953, at Bethel United Methodist Church in Mound. They purchased their first home in St. Louis Park, and five years later, after the arrival of three boys, moved one block south to larger quarters.

His career of diamond setting found Win at Cornelius Jewelry on the Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis. He set up his shop in the Kresge Bldg Oct. 4, 1971, and was there until 1976, when he purchased Stewart’s Jewelry in Cokato, which he renamed Win Brand Jewelry. During the time he was in Minneapolis, he taught diamond setting at Minneapolis Vo-Tech.

Family, church, bowling, golfing, and fishing were important to him, but singing was Win’s passion. He sang in the Vocational High School choir, choirs at Trinity Methodist, Mound Methodist, Aldersgate Methodist, Aldersingers, Minnetonka Singers, Cokato ELC choir, and many weddings and funerals. Win was a Rotarian and received a Paul Harris Fellowship.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Winfield T. and Edith; daughter Nancy Brand; and a brother, Donald.

Win is survived by his wife, Muriel; sons David (Cindee) Brand, Douglas Brand, and Dean (Debbie) Brand; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sisters Marian DeMarais, and Maxine (Jim) Correll; and a sister-in-law, Mona Brand.
