Llewellyn ‘Lew’ Buss, 77

Llewellyn “Lew” Francis Buss, age 77, of Lester Prairie, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012, at the Ridgeview Hospital in Waconia.

He was born June 30, 1934, in Hastings, the son of George and Josephine (Doffing) Buss. Lew was baptized and confirmed at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Hastings.

He graduated from St. Paul Park High School in 1952.

Lew married Marceil Killinger June 13, 1953, in Mason City, IA. Their marriage was blessed in the Catholic faith May 27, 1954, at the St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, South St. Paul. Lew and Marceil were blessed with five children.

In the early years, Lew was a member of the Minnesota National Guard.

Lew and Marceil were involved in the newspaper business for nearly their entire career, working for the Velva, ND Journal with brother-in-law Jerry Jordahl, and the Granville, ND Herald. They owned the Braham, Minnesota Journal, Onamia Independent, and the Lester Prairie News, running the Lester Prairie News until their retirement in 2000.

Lew very much loved photographing and writing up the local high school sports for the newspaper.

He enjoyed snowmobiling and showing his vintage car in classic car shows. Lew also enjoyed following the Minnesota Vikings and Twins.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marceil; parents George and Josephine Buss; a sister, Loraine Buss; parents-in-law Charles and Hazel Killinger; brothers Anthony (Tony) Buss, Joseph Buss and Ervin Buss; sisters-in-law Florence Buss, Nona Jordahl, Glenna Speth and Lillian Killinger; and brothers-in-law Jerome Jordahl and John Speth.

Lew is survived by his loving family: children, LuAnn (Randall) Stender, Timothy (DeAnn) Buss, TerriLea (Greg) Bestul, Lynn (Laura) Buss, and Robert Buss; grandchildren Bethany and Brandon Stender, Melissa, Corey and Megan Buss, Kimberly, Matthew and Alexander Bestul, Maren and Rachel Buss, and Bailey and Gavin Buss; a sister, Elizabeth “Betty” (Ted) Hakanson; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law Joyce Buss, Katie Buss, William “Bud” and Bonnie Killinger, and Irene and Bruce Horstman; nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, March 15 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted with Father Tony Hesse as the celebrant. Readers for the Mass were Lynn Buss and Bethany Stender. Gift bearers were Megan Buss and Melissa Buss. Interment followed with military rites at Holy Trinity Cemetery.

Visitation was Wednesday, March 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 7:30 p.m., and parish prayers at 8 p.m.

Casket bearers were Lew’s grandsons, Brandon Stender, Corey Buss, Matthew Bestul, Alexander Bestul, Bailey Buss and Gavin Buss; and sons-in-law Randy Stender and Greg Bestul.
