Lois A. Deragon, 63

Lois Ann (Mayotte) Deragon, age 63, of Hutchinson, journeyed to the Spirit World very peacefully Friday, April 20, 2012, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Nov. 28, 1948, in Hayward, WI, the daughter of Raymond “Rex” and Bessie LaPointe Mayotte.

Lois was a member of the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians. She attended St. Mary’s Grade School in Odanah, and graduated from Ashland High School in 1966.

Lois and James K. Deragon were joined in holy marriage Feb. 25, 1967, at St. Mary’s Church in Odanah, WI. God blessed their marriage with five children.

In 1969, Lois and James moved from Minneapolis to Hutchinson.

Lois attended and graduated from Ridgewater Technical College in Hutchinson, where she also served as the Student Senate president.

She was an ordained minister, and frequently spoke at Christian conventions. She also spent years on reconciling various Native issues here in the state of Minnesota with both tribal and state governments.

Lois enjoyed reading and writing, was an accomplished oil painter, and also a great cook and baker.

She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, James K. Deragon of Hutchinson; five children: Deborah (Deannifer James) Deragon of Ashland, WI, Karri (Brad) Bigboy of Bad River, WI, Michael Deragon of Morris, Nicolas Deragon (Mariah Ralston) of Bismarck, ND, and Isaac Deragon (Allie Welter) of Morris; three grandchildren: Isaiah, Caiden and Ayanna; sibling: Rex “Bill” Mayotte of Idaho, Douglas Mayotte of DePere, WI, Edward Mayotte of Grand Forks, ND, Michael Mayotte of Hancock, MI, and Patrick Mayotte and Linda Mayotte, both of Odanah, WI; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Lois was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Warren Mayotte; and by a sister, Norma Mayotte Conners.

Funeral services took place Friday, April 27 at 11 a. m. at the Bad River Community Center in Odanah, WI. Interment followed at Odanah Cemetery on the Bad River Reservation.

A wake took place Thursday, April 26, beginning at 5 p.m., at the Community Center.

Firekeeper was Andrew Mayotte.

Casket bearers were Josh Bender, Zach Bender, Ben Conners, Frank Conners, Jacob Deragon, Jon Filteau, James Mayotte and Tom Mayotte.
