Bernadette Derosier, 98

Bernadette Agnes (Poirier) Derosier, age 98, of rural Howard Lake, passed away at her residence early Sunday morning, March 4, 2012.

She was born Dec. 26, 1913, in Oak Pointe, MN, the daughter of Jules and Emma Mandeville Poirier. Bernadette was baptized as a young baby in Baudette, and confirmed at the age of 12, in 1925, in Waverly.

Bernie spent her early years in Waverly doing many jobs before moving to Minneapolis/St. Paul at the age of 13. She returned to Waverly after five years to become a midwife to expectant mothers.

Bernie met her husband Lawrence Derosier and married in 1937. They moved to Hopkins with three young children. Lawrence was drafted into the military, leaving Bernie to care for these children all under school age.

Bernie did many different jobs such as sewing, washing clothes, and making curtains and quilts to pay the bills. Four years later, Lawrence returned from war. They remained in Hopkins, having three more children.

Bernie became employed by Red Owl in 1950, and continued to work there for 23 years before retiring and moving to Howard Lake.

Bernie continued to be involved in community activities. She served as the president of the Women’s Auxiliary of American Legion Post 407 for two years. A faithful member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted, Bernie belonged to its St. Anne’s Society. She also was an active member of the CCW, making quilts and running bazaars. She was a member of the Legion auxiliaries in both Hopkins and Winsted.

Bernie enjoyed the big outdoors, gardening, flowers, plants, and trees. She loved sewing many different items. She made rugs, quilts, and baby clothes for charity. Along with this, she was an avid carpenter and contractor, and always had construction projects in process. She never accepted “it cannot be done” because she had the knowledge to know it “could be done!”

Bernie enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her children: Jerome (Vicki) Derosier of South Haven, Donna Derosier of Buffalo, Barbara (Michael) Daly of St. Louis Park, Bernadette (James) Luhman of Eden Prairie, and Dianne (Lynn) Buehner of Blaine; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Poirier of Maple Plain; and many other relatives and friends.

Bernie was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Derosier; a son, Lawrence Derosier II; a granddaughter, Marie Derosier; her parents; brothers and sisters John Poirier, Emma Ringer, Delphine Poirier, Albert Poirier, Alphone Poirier, Rose Carpenter, Anthony Poirier, Arthur Poirier, Robert Poirier, and Mary Galvin.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Thursday, March 8 at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Winsted with Father Tony Hesse as the celebrant. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waverly.

Visitation was Wednesday, March 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., and continued Thursday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
