Helen M. Engel, age 79, of Waconia, formerly of Mayer, died Sunday March 11, 2012, at Park View Care Center in Buffalo.
She was born Sept. 28, 1932, in Waverly, the daughter of Kenneth and Sadie (Lund) Paul. Helen was baptized Oct. 23, 1932, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, and confirmed at the same church April 6, 1946.
Helen was united in marriage to Melvin Harry Engel Feb. 9, 1957, at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Minneapolis. This union was blessed with seven children.
Helen had worked for Wright Hennepin Cooperative and the Maple Lake Public School before purchasing, with her husband, Heldt’s Bar in Mayer.
Helen suffered the death of her husband in February of 1990.
After retiring in March of 2002, Helen moved to Watertown, and for the past two years, has been a resident of The Lighthouse in Waconia.
An all-around sports fan, Helen enjoyed playing pool and bowling. She loved going to games to watch her grandchildren play.
Helen cherished time spent with her family, and will always be remembered for her fun-loving, good-hearted personality.
In addition to her husband, Melvin, Helen was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Engel; parents Sadie and Kenneth Paul; stepfather Bill Dingmann; brothers Herb Paul and Ed Paul; and sisters-in-law Sally Paul and Lois Westphal.
She is survived by her loving family; children Connie Klemz of Buffalo, Dan Engel of St. Paul, Patty (Jeff) Mooney of Clearlake, Pam Ahlm of Annandale, Cindy (Rick) Feltmann, Bob (friend Cindy) Engel, all of Waconia, and Jane Richards (Ronald) Barker of Antioch IL; grandchildren Rich (Heather) Klemz, Vicki Klemz, Amanda (Kory) Kunze, Danielle Engel, Craig (Aimee) Mooney, Heather Mooney, Mike Ahlm, Joe Ahlm, Kallie Kammer, Tiffany Kammer, Brooke Kammer, Derek Feltmann, Amber Feltmann, Jennifer Vanderberg, Jonathan Vanderberg, Jay (Kristen) Vanderberg; and great-grandchildren Espen Kunze, Jayda Kunze, Rylie Klemz, Mikalya Klemz, and Alex Vanderberg.
Helen is further survived by sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Deloris Paul, Roger Westphal, and Dale and Bonnie Engel; and other relatives and friends.
A funeral Mass took place Wednesday March 14 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, with Father Kenneth O’Hotto as celebrant of the Mass. Interment was at the Howard Lake Cemetery.
Visitation was Tuesday, March 13 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home in Waconia, with vigil prayers at 7:30 p.m.; and continued Wednesday at the church one hour prior to the Mass.
Casket bearers were Dick Klemz, Bob Engel, Rich Klemz, Craig Mooney, Mike Ahlm, and Joe Ahlm.
