Jerry Palmer Furuseth, age 79, of Arizona, former guidance counselor at Holy Trinity High School in Winsted, died Thursday, April 19, 2012, at the Serenity Hospice House in Phoenix, AZ.
There will be a celebration of Jerry’s life Saturday, June 9 at 1 p.m. at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with the Revs. Ben Carlson and Terri Cuppett officiating.
Arrangements are by Angel Cremation and Burial of Mesa, AZ.
Jerry was born Aug. 30, 1932, in Gully, MN, to Peder Furuseth and Johanna (Fladland) Furuseth. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church.
He attended school in Thief River Falls, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950.
Jerry was united in marriage to Marlis M. Anderson of Thief River Falls July 18, 1958, in Moorhead.
Jerry furthered his education at Valley City State University, and Moorhead State University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in education in 1960. He played football, basketball, and tennis in college.
He also attended the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks and received his master’s degree in administration.
Jerry taught history, physical education, and coached at Mapleton, ND. He also held the position of principal at Lake Bronson, Velva, and Clarissa.
In 1967, Jerry received his specialty degree from Mankato State University, and worked as a superintendent from 1967 to 1985 in Garden City, Waubun, Erskine, and Northome, MN.
From 1986 to 1996, Jerry worked as a guidance counselor at Holy Trinity High School in Winsted, where he retired in 1996.
A devoted husband, who loved his children, grandchildren, and friends, Jerry loved fishing, hunting, and camping with his family, and he spent many weekends at Lake of the Woods. Jerry was also a great dancer.
He attended St. Peter Lutheran Church in Mesa, AZ
Jerry is survived by his wife, Marlis Furuseth of Mesa, AZ; his sons, Joel (Shani) Furuseth, Barry (Ali) Furuseth, all of Rogers, AR, and Thor (Theresia) Furuseth of Gilbert, AZ; daughters Lori (Sy) Luhman of Fargo, ND, Nanci (Lester) Thomas, of Indian Hills, CO, and Kari (Luke) Reese of Shafer, MN; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is further survived by sisters Evelyn Walsh of Seattle, WA, Myrtle Stromberg of Thief River Falls, MN, and Ethel (Jim) Walker of Bemidji; sisters-inlaw Millie Furuseth of Thief River Falls, and Cleo Furuseth of Williston, ND, and Sharon Bergsgaard of Crookston; and several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Peder and Johanna; brothers Paul, Leonard, and Norman; sisters Pearl Helgenset, and Nobelle Garr; and a nephew, Jon Furuseth.
