Mildred Esther Heltunen, age 93, of Calumet, MI, passed away Saturday, June 23, 2012.
She spent the last three years at her daughter, Carol’s home; her daughter, Jean’s home; and, most recently, at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility.
Mildred was born Oct. 13, 1918, in Calumet, MI, to Gust and Lempi Junttila.
She attended Calumet Public Schools, and graduated in 1936.
Mildred then graduated from Michael Reese School of Nursing in 1940, and worked as a pediatric nurse in Chicago until 1943, when she moved to Detroit and worked as a public health nurse until 1947.
After her children were grown, Mildred returned to nursing as an RN in a nursing home in Southfield, MI.
Mildred was united in marriage to Arnold Heltunen April 5, 1947. They made their home in Southfield, MI until Arnold retired in 1976, when they moved to Calumet.
Arnold, preceded her in death June 23, 2001.
Mildred was a member of the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet.
She is survived by one son, Robert (JoAnne) Heltunen of Laurium, MI; three daughters, Kathy (Paul) Kero of Negaunee, MI, Jean (Robert) Edwards of Ishpeming, MI, and Carol (Hans) Impola of Cokato; two sisters, Mabel Bohjanen and Margaret Benda; four sisters-in-law, Angie Junttila, Sylvia Golka, Ann Severance, and Phyllis (Bob) Rogers; and two brothers-in-law, Paul (Phyllis) Heltunen and Ralph (Virginia) Heltunen.
She is further survived by 29 grandchildren, 54 great- grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews; a dear first cousin, Edith Niederer; and other cousins.
In addition to her husband, Arnold, Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Wilbert, Reuben, George, and Carl; and a sister, Eleanor.
The funeral service took place Friday, June 29 at 11 a.m. at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet, MI, with Pastor Richard Eskola officiating. Burial was in the Lake View Cemetery in Calumet.
