Clifford J. Hertzog Obituary – 9/1/2012


Clifford J. Hertzog, age 69, of Winsted, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2012.

He was born May 30, 1943, in Winsted Township, McLeod County, the son of Linus C. and Magdalen A. Lachermeier Hertzog.

Clifford was joined in holy marriage with Catherine C. “Katie” Demarais Sept. 30, 1961, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. God blessed their marriage with two sons.

Cliff was employed for 26 years at Littfin Lumber as a salesman. Prior to that, he was employed at Tonka Toys in maintenance for 13 years and, during that time, Cliff and Katie owned and operated The Little Bake Shop in Winsted for four years.

Cliff was proud of his only grandson, Connor. He also enjoyed wintering in Mesa, AZ, and spending summers “up North” in the Longville area.

He was known for his infectious laugh and being jolly, and he had a knack for buying and selling property.

Cliff is survived by his loving sons and daughter-in-law: John Hertzog, and Ron (Leanne) Hertzog; a special grandson, Connor Hertzog, all of Winsted; a brother, Bert (Sharon) Hertzog of Winsted; a sister, Mary (Tim) Purcell of Winsted; sister-in-law Terri Wiederholt of Winsted; and many nieces and nephews. He is further survived by sisters-in-law Mary Tomlan of Sun Lakes, AZ, Peggy (Gene) Vogelgesang of Rosemount, Bernie (Denny) Vadner of Finland, MN, and Bev Demarais of Buffalo; brothers-in-law Rich Ditty of Walker, Bill and Pat Demarais of Waverly, Joe Tinsley of Ontario, CA, and Orville Hendrickson of St. Louis Park; and many other relatives and friends.

Cliff was preceded in death by his wife, Catherine C. “Katie” Hertzog; his parents, Linus and Magdalen Hertzog; a brother, Reggie; brothers-in-law Chuck Tomlan, Don Demarais, and Jerry Demarais, and sisters-in-law Shirley Hendrickson, Donna Ditty, Anna Tinsley, and Myra Demarais Munstenteiger.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place Friday, Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly with Father Kenneth O’Hotto as the celebrant. Interment followed at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waverly.

Visitation was Thursday, Oct. 4 from 4 to 8 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly; and continued Friday morning, Oct. 5, at the church, one hour prior to Mass.

Casket bearers were Craig Campbell, Scott Bayerl, Ron Jorgensen, Daryl Derby, Dean Hertzog, and Bill Rathkamp.
