James A. Hessel Sr., age 84, of Waverly, died Thursday morning, July 19, 2012.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place Saturday, July 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly. Inurnment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waverly.
There will be a time of gathering Saturday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass at the church.

James was born May 11, 1928, in Waverly, the son of Joseph and Mary Gebhardt Hessel.
He graduated from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Waverly in 1946.
James was joined in holy marriage with Donna Mae Berg Sept. 25, 1954, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly.
Jim was formerly employed as a machinist and carpenter until his retirement in 1990. He also had formerly worked for Bob’s Energy Saving Service in Waverly.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Joan; an infant son, John; a sister, Patricia; and by a brother, Irv.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Donna; children, James Hessel Jr. of Waverly, and Julie (David) Scott of Norwood; granddog Chip; sister-in-law Roseann Hessel of Rockford; and nieces and nephews.
Jim and Donna helped their daughter Julie and husband David build their house. They also enjoyed going antiquing and traveling together.
A member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waverly, Jim also belonged to the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Council 1552; and was a charter member of the Waverly Gun Club.
